Along those lines....

What if you cut some of the rubber from and old worn mount and simple stuck it in the space of the new mount...with pehaps a 1/4inch gap to allow for some settling over time. This way when the mount finally does collapse it wont contact the crossmember.

My thinking is these mounts last quite a while anyway and this idea is over kill. Just and idea none the less.

Heck, why not put a small contact switch in there so when they collapse to a certain point a light comes on...

One thing i am going to do is wrap these mounts with a heat reflective wrap. Heat kills rubber, just like it does the enigne mounts...which i will wrap/shield also.

I had this done recently too... Unfortunately although improved slightly I still have some transmission drone. I think its the torque tube - my wrench suggested doing the mounts first... I only ever seem to be right about these things when its going to cost me a lot more $$$ He wins!

I noticed nothing holding the tranny up from these two tabs and never noticed the rubber mounts. I have no driveline vibration, etc., so I assume they are there.

EDIT AFTER POST: OK, I saw the mounts are above the 19mm tranny bolts, and I see that the function is analogous to the motor mounts. There is clearance between the crossmember and the diff case. When the mounts collapse, there can be contact of the diff and crossmember and vibration, just like the oil pan hitting the front crossmember.

In my case, there is a gap between the diff and crossmember, so the mounts are not yet collapsed despite 180K miles. I can't quite see the side profile of the mounts to see if that gap in the mount structure is open or closed. It looks almost closed. If I removed the rear exhaust, I think I could get better view of it.

Thanks for alerting me to this. I still have a gap between the diff and crossmember, but I will monitor this and change the mounts at some point.
Bill,

The way I understand it is that on some there are shims either on one side or both "to level" the tranny as it mates with the cross member.
When I did mine there were no shims, I checked the measurment from side to side with the tranny lifted up in the center of the gear box and it was even so no shims.

Hawkeyes,
Did you find any shims??

What would be the functional reason for leaving that space empty, allowing the mount room to collapse?

Would that space no be the "shock absorber" of the mount?

I just finished installing new mounts and thought I’d append some pictures to this thread for anyone doing this job in the future. I don’t know about all MYs, but for my 93, I could access all 4 bolts without removing anything. The only problem was the passenger side top bolt; but, with an 18” extension through the wheel well, it was a piece of cake.

Like other people in Renlist search on transmission mounts, I also stripped the threads in one of the mounts when reinstalling. Had it finger tight, but when tightening to 61 lbs, it just started to spin. I used a Time Sert kit to repair it. Although not cheap, I will never go back to using a helicoil again.

Wish I knew... My PSD is being repaired and should be here in a couple days. Until then, it's still up on jack stands.

I replaced mine recently, had a vibration under load that was fixed with the new mounts.

The only bolt that's difficult to get at is the top passenger side but as others have said its easy using some extensions, I actually used various extensions plus a u/j and stood by the fender to crack it, I had the exhaust and the wheels off the time.

I don't know why the mountings have the gap, must be a reason I guess. My mountings were completely collapsed, the two metal parts of the mountings were resting on each other making it, effectively a solid mount.

I have a lot of history for the car but there's no mention of the mountings being replaced, if that's the case then the mounts had 289k miles when I replaced them.

My dyslexia maybe... i just couldn't find a specific reference to the trans mount bolt torques in the WSM. Is 61 ftlb for the two upper and two lower mount bolts the correct torque? Just making sure... I'm about to torque my new mounts. Thanks

NM... I found the WSM reference: 37-123 "Adjusting Transmission Suspension". Yep; the mounts are suspensions.
