German Autohauses and Foreign Car Specialists
Guys, you really should not take your 928 to a local shop or foreign car specialist, unless it is a Porsche Dealership or known good 928 specialist. I've seen too many 928's with the wrong coolant; power steering fluid in stead of ATF; hamfisted work; incorrect parts; pipe wrench dents on pulley to lock flywheel; 944 fuel pumps; wrong oil filters; broken relay panel; etc etc ......

Wrong coolant? What is the correct coolant? Every bottle I saw at the parts store claimed to be safe for all engines. I used prestone, water and water wetter. Am I in danger?

There was a funny tidbit in Road & Track a year or two ago, regarding a new 928 owner who called around and found a shop that would work on 928s. However, when he showed up the mechanic walked out to greet him and asked, "Is the one with the engine in front or in back?

Fabio, the coolant specified for an all-aluminium engine is Dexcool. Usually, the green/yellow stuff is bad, the red/orange stuff is good. Usually. You want (IIRC) Dexcool, and not green ethylene glycol because there are phosphates. Anyway that may not be 100% technically correct according to the FAA but the Dexcool stuff is what you want, the other stuff is bad for aluminium.

There is NO national or international standard for coolant colour.
Ignore the colour; READ THE LABEL ON THE CAN

its safe to say that most rennlisters are better 928 mechanics than 90% of the german speciality shops out there..... Sure there are some things on my 928 I just don't have the tools to fix.....but I can (usually) figure out what is wrong and how to fix it.....to fix myself or at least tell my mechanic how I think (hopefully correct) to fix it..... Outside of the known good mechanics in major metro areas......it gets pretty iffy......I had a local "german" shop tell me the oil in the TB tensioner was tied to the engine oil system......uh-huh (mental note never have them work on sharky again)

What most of the US water cooled cars originally came with was the BLUE Autobahn coolant. Pentosin still makes it. If you want it, just order it from someone who carries it or go to your local V-DUB dealer and ask for the Blue stuff. It works fantastic. I suspect that most of the coolant nowadays is phospate free. I have had great luck with all the aluminum safe coolants. I really like the newer Pink coolant by pentosin that they use in the late V-DUBs.
