Stiff auto shift lever
Still getting used to my 928. The car has been a total blast to drive. I have been manually shifting my auto gear box and love the control that this gives. My only gripe is that I really dislike that the car starts in 2nd gear. This is one of the reasons I think that the 928 has been misperceived by many as being slow and heavy feeling and why I use the ****er manually. This leads to my issue is the shifter itself. The action feels very stiff. I have noticed that at times it can be difficult to shift out of the 2 position. This is especially true one the car is hot. The transmission if left in auto shifts up and down without difficulty (except for a mild 2-3 flare, spring kit planned for future fix). It seems like I will have to muscle it out of 2 if done manually (when hot).
Any ideas on a possible cause/fix. I will admit that I have not taken apart the console to look at the linkage yet. I was hoping for some direction before I dove in. As additional information, there may be a problem with my shift lever itself. When put into gear, the little arrow on the shifter does not match up with the proper gear. I have to rely on the lighted indicatior in the dash to tell me what gear I am really in.
Thanks for any imput anyone can give.

most likely it is a worn shift cable try unhooking it from back at the trans and see how the shift lever moves. There is little in the console which would cause drag.

Jim is correct, more than likely the cable is binding some. This is something you can replace yourself, however it will take time (at least on my '81 it did) as you need to unhook rear cable and get housing off the clip on trans. From the inside you need to remove shift bezel and remove the shifter itself (it is tight fit) to undo the clip there. If I recall correct I also dropped the exhaust to remove heat shields underneath. (to get to clip holding cable housing wayyyy up on top) Before you pull the old cable out, tie new one to end in cabin and pull through.
