Intermittent running, then no start...
Given a '91 GT, running just fine on the outward leg of a short journey, on the way back the 928 starts to hesitate as if the ignition just cut out for a moment or so. I nurse the car home, stop the engine and then try to re-start it. Starter churns, engine doesn't fire, several times. Leave it until morning, still doesn't fire. Checked fuel punp relay (XXVI on mine), no problem. Engine does start, put floorboards back, feel happy.
Try to start 928 next day, doesn't start. Still won't start. Now I'm deeply puzzled, and the battery is on a charger after running it down.
Has anyone seen this sort of thing before? I've not found this intermittent behaviour on the Rennlist, but I may not have asked the right questions of the search engine,
thanks in advance,
Chris M

ck the wiring plugs at bottom of fuse panel. i think it was the red connector at terminal x. tug on each wire singly see if one pulls out. have run into this twice. joel

Both of the previous posts (Hi, Joel!) are excellent and to the point.
I will quote Jim Bailey, "Relays, relays, relays!"
There are three relays that can cause your symptoms:
EZK (ignition) - XXII
LH-Jetronic (fuel injection) - XXV
Fuel Pump - XXVI
Luckily, on your '91 the Fog Lamp relays (IV and VIII), the Starter relay (V) and the Supply relay (X) are all functionally interchangeable with these three. (The EZK relay in position XXII loks different due to the built-in fuse tester, but the relay part is the same.)
You can swap these relays around and see if the problem moves with the relay. (Or, if you're close to Atlanta, you can take it to Joel's excellent North Point Auto.)
Everyone should have a copy of the fuse and relay chart on the door of the central power panel. If yours is missing, we can often supply the original heavy plastic charts [call Jeannie at (828) 766-9280], or you can download the charts for your year from our web site at www.928gt.com and use it.

a quick note on relays, hi wally good suggestion, anytime you have your fuse panel open its not a bad idea to take a screwdriver handle and tap all relays. if they falter you know thats the next new bug on the list of many. joel
