Post Broken Exhaust Fitting

I'm new to the shark world, having had my 83 5sp for about a month. I'm starting to tackle the problems and the first is an exhaust leak. On the right manifold is a fitting that looks like some sort of air tube that has rusted away. Where does this tube go? The fitting is still there but just has a hole where I assume the tube was.
Thanks for a great forum!

The tube is a test pipe for exhaust gas prior to gong through the catalytic converter. My 86.5 has one on each manifold. Between the engine and the firewall, was the end of the pipe with a clamped rubber cap on it.

928 international shows a used one for $15.

It would be no big deal to remove what's left and put a bolt in it's place in the mean-time. Use anti-seize and don't over-tighten. You may have to take the bolt out someday.

A bit of caution there. I found that these fittings are "pipe-thread", which means that they are tapered threads. It's not even easy to get metric "pipe-thread" plugs if you live in the big city. I removed the tubing from the original fitting, drilled it out to the appropriate size for tapping (IIRC it was 1/4" pipe-thread) and tapped it. I then plugged it with that standard size plug, and then returned this modified original fitting.

There was also a larger fitting in that same vicinity on the right side, for the AIR injector fitting. It's a cap type (rather than plug) fitting, so I fashioned a plug for it and returned the original cap to secure the plug.

I think I've got the same problem....would this (while still unplugged) cause the exhaust note to sound likes it's got a leak?

I tapped out the center of the fitting and put a plug in it. Really helped the exhaust leak but I found that the rear manifold stud is broken off, looks like a weekend project. Any suggestions? Thanks to all for the input!
