Question WHAT IS THE STORY ON THIS ENGINE?

I will try to attach a link for a 928 for sale in Canada. Why does the engine look funny to me? It looks wider than normal and seems to have hose clamps on it??? I see this same picture in one of my books, but it just looks wrong. Reference in the book (Road and Track Portfolio) is also for a 1985.
Can anybody school a rookie??

http://www.canadatrader.com/result/d...9&pgno=1&srt=1

Thanks for any enlightenment

Maybe I just look at the S4/GTS models too much? With them, the pipes in the middle look shorter and closer together. And why does the later pic look like it has hose clamps on it?

Trying not to sound TOO stupid

it does have hose clamps on it.
the intake comes in 3 pieces
the left and the right side... bolt to the middle via the hose clamps to the middle piece
well what we looked at before was an 85 intake
the othe photo is an 87 S4 intake.
complete different design

So as they got newer, they got smaller and became one piece?

Thanks for the info!

There are three different intake designs.

First is used in 16V engines. There are several variations of these pipes due to ROW S models using larger diameter tubes. Also different fuel injection methods (K-Jet, L-Jet and LH-jet) require different mounting points.

'85-86 32V engine uses very wide intake to add more low end torque compared to earlier engines. Entire engine is basically almost totally different compared to latr 32V engines. Even block is different but its possible to modify them to accept later intake. This will require later head though without even more modifications.

'87 S4 and later engines use more compact intake, have larger valves, different cams etc. Big deal in these is variable flap which wides torque band even further than '85-86 intake.

There is nothing wrong with the early intake... I actually prefer it.

Take a good running '85-'86.5 and add chips and an x-pipe and you will be putting 280-290 hp to the ground. That makes a lot of bang for your buck since these years sell for so cheap compared to the S4 and up.

I do like the "spider legs" look. 280 to 290 at the wheels? Isn't that pretty optomistic? Weren't they rated at about 300, in total?

The 78-84(86E) 16V intake is usually referred to as having spider legs, the 85-86 32V as organ pipes.

They were rated at 288/302 crank HP/TQ.

'86.5 auto with X-pipe, RMB, and different chip combos, using STD correction. (SAE, take off ~10.)

Wow! Has anybody done any modifications on a GTS? Can it go to 345 at the rear wheels? That would be awesome!!
