I just spoke to a representative of Kumho Tires about my "pulling to the right" problem. He told me that Kumho Ecsta 712 Tires are not suited for the 928. The recommended type for the 928 would be Ecsta KH11.
I checked the website and found that the Ecsta 712 are not listed for the 928.
<a href="http://www.kumhousa.com/TireSelect/YMM.asp?aYear=1991&aMake=PORSCHE&aModel=928&aOption=S4%20Front" target="_blank">http://www.kumhousa.com/TireSelect/YMM.asp?aYear=1991&aMake=PORSCHE&aModel=928&aOption=S4%20Front</a>
Here is the info on the KH11:
<a href="http://www.kumhousa.com/Products/PtnDetails.asp?mainCatID=1&PTNID=KH-11&refAction=PtnDetail" target="_blank">http://www.kumhousa.com/Products/PtnDetails.asp?mainCatID=1&PTNID=KH-11&refAction=PtnDetail</a>
(interesting...it doesn't list Porsche under the applications)

Now, how should a consumer know this?

Erik, I saw the DIY alignment article on the Nichols site. It is tempting to try. And I msut admit that your words are starting to sink in. When it is time for new tires all around, I may go with a more "established' brand... Thanks for the input. - Ruf

Interesting Nicole. I recently recieved a recommendation from a reputable tire shop for the Kumho 712s. I just asked for a middle-of-the-road (no pun intended) tire that would provide good wet and dry traction and wouldn't wear out in 5k miles. I believe the total quote was $750 for the 712s, mounted, high-speed on car balance, and a front-end alignment.

Well... the Kumho guy talked about tread design, that the 928 was factory equipped with X and the Kumho 712 is Y and therefore I should use KH11, which is the same as X.
I think I'll switch to something that's proven on the 928: Yohkohama AVS or Bridgestone S03 (expensive). Since I have RE730ies on the rear, I am also considering the new generation RE-730, but really haven't had the chance to study all the differences, yet.
Wish I had nothing else to do than shop for tires...

Just got the Yokohama AVS on both front wheels. First impression is that the car no longer pulls to the right and the steering wheel is straight.
I will evaluate this further over the weekend, but on the 4-mile drive home I did not feel the symptoms I had experienced with the Kumho 712.
I guess I won't buy tires with the name of a North Korean town anymore. Well, nobody would buy "Baghdad" tires either, or would you? ;-)

Interesting.....I have 14K miles on my Kumho ECSTA 712's and haven't had the behavior that Nicole reports.
If I could, I'd put on Bridgestone S03's when the Kumhos wear out (but the S03's don't come big enough).

The tire dealer took the Kumhos back. I don't think you would want a pair of tires that make your car pull to the right, and your steering wheel to be off by 2 degrees to the left if you want to drive straight...

I have driven the car on the freeway for quite some time today, and can say that with the Yokohama AVS Sport front tires it now tracks absolutely straight, and the steering wheel is perfectly centered.
Thanks, DEVEK/DynoTech for hanging in there with me through this odyssee!
We have learned that Kumho Ecsta 712 tires are low cost, but the quality seems inconsistent on our cars. In my case, they were actually pretty expensive: Considering all the time and effort that myself, the tire dealer, and the DynoTech technicians had to invest. Lesson learned.

Nicole -
Here's to continued success with the Yoko's <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />
Another POSITIVE I found with them - the car won't 'wander' and follow any grooves/uneven spots in the road.
Since I just went to the 17" 996 wheels, that came with P-Zero's....(the 16's & Yoko's are now my AX/DE set!) - I find I like the EVS EVEN more. I am NOT AT ALL impressed with the P-Zero...it is a 'whiney' ride, and doesn't seem to have near the stick of the Yoke. I'll just drive the pi$$ out of the Pirellis and get new EVS in the 17"!

Just got back. (and I need to remind myself to put an update in my original "tire suggestions" post in a week or so).
For starters, the local Discount Tire (www.tires.com). did an excellent job! Individual jacks to lift the car using some 2"thick rubber pads. I was very pleased with the whole process. (Plus the price seemed good when you add all the usual stuff, tire disposal...etc). $475. (Think fronts were $101 and rear $115). This was the last place for a while that had the rears......so what-the-hey.
I gotta say the tires look far superior mounted vs the previous XGT-V4s. A nice "square" look and even with the rims. (or close). The tread even looks good on the car.
So far, ride is nice. Handling is excellent. Very quiet also. (but a little road time will tell).

I have Bridgestone RE730's all around...they have about 15k miles.
-I think that there are two basic wear characteristics to tires: 1. How quickly they wear out, and 2. How they behave when they get old.
The Bridgestone RE71's that I put on my hooligan of an '85 S2 only lasted about 15k miles. Not too good- and before you go off on me, realize that though I do take a few corners fast, I don't burn the tires off on a regular basis. I think that 15k from these was probably about right, considering their 180 treadwear.
I now have Bridgestone RE730's- the replacement for the RE71's- and I bought them because 1. my overweight beer-guzzling brother put them on his GTI and had great results, and 2. They were cheap and had a "name" brand.
Bridgestone/Firestone has since immolated their name...and burned ALL their historical bridges with the Ford Motor Company!
Well, the RE730's have about 20k miles, and I bet I get another 5k or so. Despite the fact that both front ball joints are about to fall right off the car, and I have aligned it myself by sight- it drives perfectly straight!
I don't know...I parked next to an NSX the other day in South Beach [SOBE] Miami, and they looked pretty good. I'll try those or Nitto's next.
Normy!

Normy. Know what. (what Bob). The tire discussion, wax, oil...etc, are all pretty good. I like the idea of input from all folks, and alot of it is what you personally like.
One of the main things I do look for though is significant "bad stuff" that everyone should stay away from.
Propably the only way you'd get a vaild test is to benchmark them all on the same car, various conditions, driving, and events...etc. (and that is not just the tire discussion...it applies to them all).
Later........... <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />
