Default Easy way to tell if chipped or not?

Thinking about getting Autothority, and just want to make sure I not already chipped.

Can I tell the difference between the Autothority ones, and the stock ones? If so, is one box any easier to open than the other to check?

Also any good write ups for dummies on installing chips?

And please no Pringles jokes guys!!!

Thanks
Parker

Take out computer, open case (ground yourself to something) and look.

Not being a smartass, it's as easy as that. I don't have a picture of an aftermarket chip, but I do believe there are a couple of posts about them with pics.

Do chips honestly make much difference in these cars? In my experience with other normally aspirated cars, chips don't do much more than reduce wallet weight. Are Sharks an exception?

Hey Sean...

Looked for pics or a write up, but could find anything. I guess it must be that easy huh?

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't replacing aftermarket chips with aftermarket ones. So I guess if they are not labeled, I'll replace them with labeled ones. I'll still take some pics or a write up if anybody has some

S car go, its a pretty hot topic when that question gets asked...I thought I would give it a try, and find out for myself. I'll take more hp anyday, even if it is only a couple...

Thanks
Parker

Parker,

Mine's an '85, and I got a set of chips on eBay a few months ago. When I opened it up to replace them, here's what I found!

Somebody did love my car after all.

I can send you a document showing how to swap chips if you email me via the link on my website.

That's a good question. On the '85-'86 32V engines it makes a huge difference. At least huge to me, ~20-25hp for 30 min of clean work. The ebay clones are Autority chips but they are much cheaper, ~$40-$75.

From what I heard about the S4-up, the change is very small and hardly noticable.

Thanks for the pic Nice to know what to expect when I crack them open, not too intimidating at all. The only electrical items I 've played with so far have been replacing the analog clock, which isn't saying much...

Sent you an email John, Thanks! Will definatly take you up on the offer.

Yea lately I've just had the urge to add more hp, or just do something to make the car even better than it already is. Hopefully this gets it out of my system for a while anyway. If the cars already chipped, I might be forced to do big reds -Bilstein /Eibach. Wish me luck...

Thanks
Parker

Those chips will raise your rev limit to 7000. Do not go there. I had them in my 89, and it dynoed 289 RWHP, stock exhaust. I was glad I dynoed the car, as I had a tired MAF that was robbing power, and drivability was suffering. Always good to baseline. No point in modding if you aren't all there.

Deja Vu. I have written this before several times. It's right up there with plug wires. OH yeah. Extended high revs could cause oil starvation to the con rod bearings, or so I'm told. Once you have the chips, it is sooo tempting.

There, I feel better. Now I just have to run out and buy another copy of ''Catcher in the Rye'' and all will be well.

Disconnect the battery.

The 2 computers (brains) are bolted to a frame which is in turn bolted to the car in the passenger footwell. The frame is held to the car by 2 allan bolts that once removed and the cables unplugged you can remove the brains individually from the frame.

The brains have a cover that requires you to bend back the tabs and 'voila' your in. As advised above make sure your body is properly grounded to avoid any ESD (electric static discharge) so you dont fry any active components.

The way I understand it on the 87+ knock sensor LH cars the chips don't give that much of an improvement......no serious HP gain, but a gain in feel-response....i.e the engine responds quicker...

Now if you had some mods like an X pipe and high flow exhaust.....then I would go to the trouble to sharktune your 928 and custom make a chipset for your exact 928....that is the ideal solution, custom dyno tuned to your 928....pricey but perfect!
