Alternator ?
I can't get any charge from the alternator is that normal? I used a volt meter and I am getting 12.98 from the battery when the car is running. The battery is brand new "interstate" and the alternator is only 3 months old and it is an after market product for o'really's. That was what the pervious owner installed. My problem is when I lisent to the radio for a while without the engine running and when I turn on the car so the battery could charge. The alternator is unable to charge the battery. I have to use a charge charger to charge the battery. The car will run okay for weeks no problems as long I don't listen to the radio with engine off.
Could it be the after market alternator?
Any suggestions
Thank you

I just replaced my alternator for the same problem (though not related to the radio). When I tested the alternator at the battery post on the back, it was making about 2 volts. This is generally due to a faulty voltage regulator resulting from a thermal condition that is brought on by improper ventilation of the alternator.
I've never heard of an "O'really" alternator, I used an updated (Valeo type voltage regulator) rebuilt Bosch unit from. If you install a new Bosch unit (PN 92860311401), you'll need the new shroud (PN 92860313304) as well as the Alternator Circuit Resistor (PN 92864198100). Check the technical bulletin (#7 in the tech refernce book) for installation and other info. All this stuff is available from the big three.

lacast,
I just installed a rebuild from O'Reilly's.
If the PO installed it without removing the four long screws from the 'body' of the old unit then you won't have the alternator cover/cooling dam connected. In mild weather this might not be a problem, in hot weather it would probably cause
an overheat condition which would eventually fritz a diode. If you have a coolant leak or oil dripping from any source -head, block, power steering, or, a clapped out smog pump - it would coat the inner windings attract grit/sand/dust.
And again a overheat condition and a smoked alternator. Make sure you have the cover!!!
In our case, when we buy a rebuilt Alternator from O'Reilly's the critter comes with a Lifetime Warranty at no additional cost. So you might pull the alt. and have it tested. If it fails and you can get hold of the PO have him stop by O'Reilly's and tell them the alt crapped out.
If he is from out of state or out of town he can tell them that the car is at his Brother in laws house -that would be you- and have them call a O'Reilly's near you for the exchange.
The rebuilt one costs like $170.00, so promise the PO $20.00 or $30.00 if he will do you the favor. He doesn't need the sales slip if he goes back to the store where he bought it, the transaction will be on the computer.
On my rebuilt Alt. I have two extra -male spade-
connectors in addition to the two connections I need.
One of the extra connectors is stamped with a 'W' which is for testing/diagnostics, the other one has me stumped and I'm not sure if I need to jumper it to ground or not.
I asked EVERYONE at O'Reilly's and no one knows for sure if it should be jumpered or just capped.
I have to move the car in the next 2-3 hours as we are due a freezing rain shortly. Also, I did the swap in front of my adjoining lot but it's only 20 feet from the cul-de sac fire hydrant...Big NO-NO in A town strapped for cash.
TIM,
Yep, O'Reilly's -used to be Checkers- sells the Alt's. . They list two of them but when ordering can only get one.
I had a spare which was fried by Checkers during a test. The original which recently died and the rebuilt one. None of them looked the same. on the *** end.I hope this puppy has an internal regulator!
What's the function of the Alt. resistor?
TIA & IHTH

There was a very long thread on alternator problems a month or so ago...you might do an archive search. The thread had a lot of diagnostic info in it including a way to check alternator function while mounted on the car. The first place I'd look is at grounds...do a good cleaning of your ground connection from the battery....fixed my alt problem on my '82.
