Post Recalls

Just if anybody was wondering here is the website for any recall of any vehicle or equipment in the U.S. even if the manufacturer does not tell you.

Does this mean the dealer will replace my '78's aluminum ball joints for free??? Sounds too good to be true. Here's what my search produced-
"Make : PORSCHE Model : 928 Year : 1978
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 78V121000 Recall Date : MAY 22, 1978
Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 365
Summary:
THE FRONT AXLE CASTER AND CAMBER ADJUSTERS COULD CRACK DUE TO IMPROPER MANUFACTURE. SHOULD THIS HAPPEN, THE ADJUSTERS COULD LOOSEN AND CAUSE WHEEL MISALIGNMENT. ALSO, THE TIRE ON EITHER THE LEFT OR RIGHT SIDE COULD EXPERIENCE EXTENSIVE WEAR.
Consequence:

Remedy:
THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE CASTER AND CAMBER ADJUSTERS WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.
Notes:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES.SYSTEM: SUSPENSION; FRONT AXLE CASTER AND CAMBER ADJUSTERS.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT COULD RESULT."

I wonder if recalls include federalized Euro models imported into the US??

That is not a recall for the aluminum ball joint carriers, but is a recall for improperly heat-treated caster/camber adjusters. Note that only 365 cars were potentially affected.

As far as I know, there was never a recall on the aluminum ball joint carriers. One lister reported several years ago that his dealer replaced the ball joints, but I suspect that was a mistake on the part of the dealer.

Yes, I found that report on the Nichols site just above Wally's "Ball Joint Warning".

Thanks, Wally
(BTW-according to the VIN, my '78 was the 195th 928 made.)
