Every time I have looked under a MAF there is a big pool of engine oil lying in the intake under it; so what difference will a few drops of air filter oil make?

The one difference is that oil you see enters the intake UNDER the MAF.

On three daily driven 928's with K&N filters I found a nice debris pile on the MAF screen.

I've never seen this with the stock paper filter on dozens of 928's. No matter how old the filter is.

K&N air filters have been known to lay in wait for 15 or 20 years just to instill a false sence of security in the 928 owner. They will then launch their diabolical master plan and spew hatred all over your MAF. Next thing you know, BOOM, and in a quick 20 years you're replacing a perfectly good MAF. I, personally, sell all my 928's after 14 years just to avoid this insidious scheme.

A load of oil on the hot wire from an over enthusiastically re-oil K&N will be too much for the burn off cycle to get rid of.

You may be able to get rid of the excess with a solvent cleaner.

Certainly an excess of oil on the wire will upset the calibration.

I do get some VERY oily MAFs in here for rebuild, but I suspect most of these are from badly oil burning motors, rather than over -oil K&N.

The main cause of MAF "failure" is the normal erosion of the wire, due to the burn off cycle.

I don't recommend K&N because

they don't give more power
they may not filter as well as the stock paper type
over oiling after cleaning is a possibility.
