Smile Sound coming from HVAC controls ?

In the upcoming weeks, I am going to work on some of the items in the center console. As it stands now, my only real problem is no heat and that I will be tracking down soon. I have another irritating item in that whenever I turn the fan on or change the slider settings I get a sound coming out of the center vent that sounds like a bearing going south. Sometimes it stops almost immediately, other times it just keeps going and then I just turn off the fan.

Any idea what it might be ? Is it something that I can fix with a little WD-40 ?

Robert,

It could possibly be the small fan that pushes air across the cabin temperature sensor in the top right corner of the console. It is located behind the round plastic cap with two slots. The console must be completely removed to remove this fan motor which is bolted to the inside of the console and housed in a rubber noise reducing insulated cylinder. You maybe able to remove the HVAC control module and disconnect the power lead to the fan to see if the noise goes away before you remove the console.

However, this fan should be running at all times thus the noise would be independent of the HVAC controls. If you only hear the noise when the HVAC fan switch is on then you are possibly hearing the noise of the bearings being acoustically amplified from the blower motor itself.

cheers,
James

I am having this problem too. After reading posts here I know it is the fan at end of climate sampling hose. Now I need to know what is the approximate replacement cost and can I do it myslef? I removed the dash trim around it (and the cig lighter) and got access to rubber hose just fine, but how deep do I need to access to get to the fan? any help?

This is on a 87 944 n/a but the dash is the same....
