Default How much should I sell my 83 928S for?

Ebay was a bust. Too many BS'ers on there. I'm in CA and the car needs a cat convertor. I have not tried to smog test it because of this. The sunroof does not work-may be the switch but don't know. I have a new switch but no time to mess with this. The radio does not work. The a/c blows warm-was told just needs a re-charge. And the speedometer does not work. Plus there are two cracks on the dash. From what I've read here it all sounds like a typical 928. It starts everytime. Handles great and it's in fair to good condition for it's age. What's a good starting price? Where is a good place other than here to list it?

first...what do you know about the history of the car...got all the paperwork or maintenance? manuals? what are the option codes?
all these things will influence the price

The problem is not the car - it is the price. There are a million - well not that many but lots of 80-84 US automatics. Most are run down and will cost more to fix up than they are worth. I am not attempting to busrt your bubble, but what you have is not all that valuable.

There was some pictures posted today of an old 928 in the back of a used car lot with some flars and not much else. Yet that car even in bad shape is worth about the same as your car. Let me explain. A dash with one crack costs as much to repair as one with 100 cracks. A seat with dry leather and some cracks costs as much to repair as one that is totally trashed. A paint job that is faded with some peeling clear coat is as expensive to repair as on that has rust and looks terrible.

You get the idea. Appeal will help sell a car, but the value in the older cars is either in tracking them or restoring them. If I am going to track a car or restore it I will look for a five speed over an automatic. In restoring a car I will strip it down completely, including stripping the paint and then start from scratch. Marginal parts will always be marginal parts and as I repair and fix one area what looked good initially now stands out like a sore thumb.

Someone posted above your car being worth between $3500-5500. They are on Acid. Ask them to write a check. Go back to eBay put the car on with honest pictures and description and start it out at $500 with no reserve. You will probably get the car bid into the $1800-2200 range and be happy you got that. Prices are a bit better today then a couple of years ago, but I am still able to buy pre-85 cars for under a $1000 from time to time. These are running cars. If there are major problems or the car does not run then they go for $500-700. I recently picked up an 83 five speed original paint with a prefect all leather interior hit in the driver's door for $700. I drove the car home.

Take it for what it is worth. For some reason 928s in Calfornia go for a bit less than on the East coast. Maybe becuase the distances are greater and gas is now $4 a gallon that prices have to adjust.

Good luck with the sale.
