Guys - don't forget...
WE ARE THE GEEKS!
Being "into cars" makes us a minority.
Women (normal ones) make fun of us when we are not around.
Most normal people who buy Porsches wouldn't see any reason to be your friend just because you have the same car.

I always wave to 911's as I am blowing them into the weeds.

I 2nd that. Definitely a gearhead/waterboy. Grew up aircooled (67 911S, still in the family), and my first P-car was a waterboy model. So I'm all over the map.

That said, the 911 is an iconic car. It's what people think of when they think of Porsche, if they think of the marque at all. People think of Wranglers, not Cherokees, when they think of Jeeps. How does this work in Ferrari or Lambo land? Are Countach owners offended by Diablos? Or is that backwards?

In the end, stop worrying about what other people think of you or your car. If you're driving a 928, or any other Porsche, chances are you're a million miles ahead of most of the planet on many levels. Enjoy it for what it is, and if the snobby moron driving the '07 TT doesn't realize that 60+ years of Porsche engineering ingenuity went into that car, then so be it. At least he bought that instead of a Maserati.

I have fallen in to the habit of ignoring other P-car owners on the road.
I've even driven alongside another 928 and got not one bit of acknowledgement.

Then I went to one of the car events at Watkins Glen and to my surprise, a 911/carrera guy flashed his lights at me. I was able to just wave as we passed.
Now I have to remember when I'm going to car enthusiast events that my lowly 928 may be recognized as something more than just a road appliance.

It's always fun diving into the twisty bits and watch cars fall away in the rear view mirror. I'm not a good fast driver, it's just the chassis is sooooo capable.

Surprisingly, here in South Jersey, near Atlantic City, I go days on end without seeing any p-cars, almost never a 928 (actually, the only 928s I've seen here ever, have been in someone's driveway or in a parking lot).

Reminds me of when I was getting take out one night. This Boxster rolls in and parks on the back row away from everybody. As I was getting in my car the Boxster owner comes up and asks if my car is a new 911. I get asked a lot of questions when I'm out, but I was not prepared for this one.

On my first trip home with a 928, a 996 pulled up a long side me, looked the 928 up and down like it was a supermodel, flashed a two fingered wave, nodded, and disappeared into the distance. When I got to the next town, I thought I'd do the same thing with a Boxster at a stoplight and two middle aged women looked like they were going to call the cops.

When I got my MINI, I made a habit of trying to flash other MINIs. Oblivious. I don't care anymore. I'm so busy I don't get to even drive mine enough, let alone sit around and wonder whether the 911 crowd "likes me." Oh, well, I'll make time this weekend.

Jim M's post listing the types of Porsche owners is excellent. The question I have after reading it is what the pie chart looks like of those owner types. My guess is the status pie piece is pretty fat. And the members of that pie piece are about being seen and appreciated, not conveying appreciation to others. I gotta believe this cuts out a lot of waves.

I can spot a P-car a mile away. I wave at everyone I see. I have figured out, that not everyone shares our enthusiasm. Don't take it personal. I have had Boxster's, 928's, 944's, 911's, Cayenne's not wave back as well...it's their loss.

The car is so rare in Germany, except for meetings I see about 3 to 5 per year.
Most people don't recognize what it is, especially Boxster owners don't even look at you, they have no idea. At gas stations I'm getting all kinds of questions, I especially like the "That's the one with the Audi motor"... Dude, if you have no idea, don't even ask. Go home and Google 928 GTS!

But on the Autobahn it gives you the license to pass
The width of the car combined with a unique design lets everybody in the left lane know that there is serious sh$*% coming their way. I never have to flash my lights, they all move to the right, very convenient

In this little corner of the universe, there are very few posers who own Porsches .... or any other sports car of merit. The 'Status conscious' group noted in Jims amusing post are more likely to be driving larger Bimmer or Benz sedans.
The pleasant result is that we all flash or wave, regardless of what we drive: the frequency of meeting on the road is far less than that in LA ... so perhaps we are just lonely
Specifically regarding the 928 - it is highly respected amongst our PCA circle .... and a similar respect is shared for all models. On the road, some of the most enthaustic waves I've received have been from out-of-province Cayennes: in returning the salute, for I admit that 'peppers' are not well programmed into my radar, I like to think that the owners are on family vacation .... with a lonely 928 or 911 tucked away in the garage at home ...

There are only two other 928s around here that I know of and I haven't seen them yet this year. Last year one of the other owners stopped next to me at a red light and rolled down his window and we chatted. Very cool guy and driving a nice champagne' example. Of course, my passenger window was not working that day so I had to get out of my car(since he was in the right lane).
Personally, I love all cars that have this level of engineering and style regardless of what badge is on the hood.

I gotta say that I seem to get a lot of love from other Porsche drivers- at PCA, or track events. Also, just in general, driving around town. Never felt as if I were snubbed.
