Options for replacing rear muffler on 1978
My rear muffler on my 78 has some rust holes in it and is to far gone to repair. This is the year where Porsche felt it was necessary to bolt the battery box to the transaxle, and the muffler to the battery box. This means that I will either have to buy a good used 78 muffler which I really don't want to do because it's very heavy. Or buy an aftermarket muffler and weld my bracket for the battery box to it. This is what I am planning to do but the configuration of the muffler is a little odd. The inlet location and the outlet locations and angle are most likely not common. Has anyone here already been through this process? If so, what type of muffler did you use.
Thanks

Just take it off - my 81 sounded great with just he CAT.
My 79 sounds even better with open pipes after the headers

I already tried that. I have headers, a Y pipe and a mid mounted teeny tiny muffler. I think it sounds too Nascar this way. I know, I'm probably in the minority but my 84 sounds better to me. Its all stock except the cat is gutted.

Take it down to your local custom exhaust shop. When I had my 79, for $500 I had new cats put on, and muffler and all stainless plumbing and nice chrome tips. It sounded great.
You have to find a custom shop... not a chain.
