Default Garage queen caution (corroded fuel rails/injectors)

Well, I have been performing the intake re & re, and was cleaning parts when I found this. Proof that just because a car spends most of its life parked, doesn't mean it's cherry.....

PS, thats just only about 1/2 of what fell out
PPS just a thought, but do ya think that this might have some effect on performance?

So now the question is how to deal with the corrosion in the rail, and the likely damage to the injectors. Do I media blast the inside if the rails & clean the injectors, replace the whole shebang (mucho $$$ at the cost of the early injectors), or get newer or custom rail rig.

NE1 out there ever replaced the '80 FI rail & injectors with a newer combo?

TIA
Ken

No media blasting of the rails! You don't want to deal with leftover media in the lines. Send the injectors out for cleaning, here's a place I'm going to use for my 911: www.witchhunter.com. They'll tell you if any are bad, the price is right at $17 per.

How much are new rails?

High flow cleaning with just some fluid would probably do it?

Thanks for that link. Anybody got a good link for injector rebuilds?

I would use Muratic Acid it should clean the rust out and not harm the good medal.

I am getting a local hydraulic shop to fab my fuel & return soft lines ($50 for pair vs ~$200) I will see if they have any ideas on the rails. I may look at replacing all the hardlines - which gets back to changing the rails over to ones that can accept standard injectors. Does anyone know if the L-jet will play nice with standard injectors - say ones swiped off a newish Ford (I always get confused over the high/low impedance issue)

Regards
Ken

With that much rust you have to wonder how long before it eats through and starts leaking gas. How about buying GOOD used rails? But have them certify that they're not in the same shape as these.

if you have that much debris in the lines you may have issues elsewhere as well (sorry to say that)
I'd recommend you flush and clean the tank and lines, as well as replacing the fuel pump and filter if you havn't already

All thats on the "ToDO" list.....although all this is getting me seriously thinkin' of pullin all the FI stuff and going full-time propane.

I also will be talking to a few handy folks in town about fabbing up new hardlines. Time to stop & research the options. Dang, I didn't really want a project right now.
