Default Stay w/Original Interior??

I've only had my '87 S4 for a month or so, and I'm really pleased at how well the POs maintained it. My interior is in almost perfect shape-lighting, instruments, switches, etc. It's all original-Blaupunkt cassette-only radio (works fine), "made for Porsche" radar detector (sort of wedge shaped, located between the shifter and center console). Even the legends on the switches and buttons are in good shape. My digital clock is the only thing not working well, and I'm thinking of a replacement from Jager Engineering. I like the looks of the round analogs, but it wouldn't be authentic. They have an LCD upgrade, and it's a lot cheaper than the analog clocks. Problem is, I actually like the slight retro look, and I'm tempted to try to keep it. Is there any point or value in keeping the interior as close to the original as possible?

How many miles do you have on the odo? What color is the interior?

None of it probably matters as much as personal taste in the long run. And switching back to original shouldn't be too hard, just the clock and faceplate. I don't know if original interiors make much of a diff in value in the current market. I would love to hear what others think.

I think with the 928 model being so old now, that we get used to the interiors of newer cars and try and bring the 928 a little more into the current time frame. I love my Momo steering wheel compared to the original one. I don't think upgrading anything on the car would have a negative effect on resale, within reason. If I were looking for the same year 928 that I have now, an '87, I'd want one with 17" Cup wheels, upgraded steering wheel, upgraded stereo/speakers, and upgraded GTS mirrors, etc. I'd actually payy more if that was already on the car.

What you can do is purchase a separate console insert to modify for the round clock. Customers of mine have done this, and kept the original parts for the future, in case they ever want to go back.

Most of what we sell is bolt-on and bold-off (or removable stick-on); this way you can customize the car to your liking, and if you or the next owner decide to revert, it can be done without trouble.

Switching console insert and clock really isn't a big deal. If you like it better that way, do it and keep the original pieces. It's your car, you are driving it, and you are the one to enjoy it. Others might have different opinions, and will do things differently. It's what keeps things interesting...
