Hi Jon, Projekt 928 states (p26):
"A futher step, taken at the beginning of 1973 and based on [an earlier] major study, was the use of the battery as a vibration damper. It was placed at the end of the gearbox. .... The result was startling. A test report from 8 February described the reduction of component vibration as "very marked" and spoke of a reduction of 35% in overall vibration at resonance rpm".

From all the work done to stop the vibrations and to stop the straight central shaft deforming into a sine wave, I'd tend to think that the vibration dampers inside the torque tube are quite imprortant Jon. (jeez man, just weld them in - not)

Yip, sold the Civic - it was a brilliant little runabout - seven cars in three countries is just too many. Remember, the beers good in Dubai too, good for a stop over next time you're on route to 'blightey'.

Thanks all.

Not exactly want I wanted to hear, but at least I know what lies ahead.

Steve, that noise is exactly the sound from my car.

It seems that the car can be safely driven for a long time without further damage. It that true? It would be nice to put off pulling the tube.

I've driven mine like this for years and it hasn't changed or gotten worse. But I really hate it. I got a used torque tube that I will rebuild and swap with the old one. Then rebuild the old one and sell it. Can't wait to see what it looks like in there. Good luck!

Loose balance weight might be able to hit center shaft on '88+ MY which has thicker center shaft. IIRR it should not reach 25mm shaft. On think shafts only damage it can do there is to bearing supports (and TT rear clamp on automatics).

Porsche left the lump of cast iron out of the CS cars as I recall. It is all about how the car FEELS more than anything else. Does point out that the rubber sleeves which locate the balancer and similar sleeves locate the bearing carriers DO WEAR over time and get too loose ...then things start moving around.
