Default How does the electric door lock system work?

I have some door locking issues.

On my 78: If you unlock the door it will unlock and then you hear a loud click as the locking mechanism reaches its fully unlocked position and then the mechanism continues to turn and the doors lock again. The system does this about 9 out of 10 times. Every once in awhile it works properly. Any ideas?

Something to do with the relative settings on each door? - if not set identically then one door locks after having been unlocked - just from memory of past posts.

No, no. The 78 has vacuum door locks unless it has been updated to the electric system or an after market system has been added.

The vacuum system has no feed back machanism. Unlocking the driver's door unlocks the passenger's door. Unlocking the passenger's door only unlocks the passenger's door and not the driver's door. There are plastic colored tubes running between the two doors. There is a vacuum manifold on the drivers door to redirect the vacuum for locking and unlocking the passengers door. There is a vacuum storage canister under the dash and there is a vent tube under the pod. Plugging the vent tube will cause the system to stop working. It will also stop the heating controls to stop working.

Some after market products use electric selnoids to control the door locks. Who knows what can go wrong with this kind of system.

Here is a page on the electric system incase someone went to a lot of work to convert your doors.

Poorly. I pulled the fuse for them and just went pure manual. At leaset I won't ever lock my keys in it. when it decides to lock itself for no reason... Ruf
