Default 928 S4 for sale

... Not that I think this is the place to sell it, unless one is living in the US, rennlist is a real small marketplace, but I'll give it a shot regardless:

The car i.q. is a 5speed 1987 S4, I'm the second owner and have had the car for little over 6 years during which it has been my daily driver. It has accumulated 360.000 km's over the years, almost exclusively freeway (110+ kmh), and longer trips (30km) and it has a full service history, including all invoices back to 87.

I am aware of three flaws that needs to be fixed: 1. Powersteering oil leakage (I top it up every 14 days or so), 2. A/C stopped working a month ago, 3. ABS light is on (might be a relay, not sure).

Outside the car is nice, but not perfect: It has no dings or major damage, but the aluminum does show signs of corrosion a couple of places. Inside, the car is near perfect and shows no sign of the neither age nor high mileage.

The car is original, safe for the desireable GTS mirrors and body-color rear wing. Also, I believe, the shifter has been shortened. Steering wheel is MOMO, but the original will be included. Same goes for the stereo (currently some cheap aftermarket MP3 player, but I still have the original Blaupunkt). I've installed an aftermarket DEFA car alarm.

Timing belt was last changed at 340KKm (December 2004).

It'll also include workshop manual CD and 4 original S4 wheels with winter tires (one season old) (the 17" Cups has good tires also (one season)).

I'm asking SEK 89.000:- (USD 12.700) - may seem a tad high for you yanks, but I feel it's a fair price over here (I guess cars are just more expensive in Europe).

Nice looking car for that amount of kilometers. Perhasp difficult to sell in North America for that money considering the transport/import etc costs.

Please remember, as you are your self, we're not all "yanks" on Rennlist. There's a 'stuck' thread indicating there are many folks in Texas and other fine states as well as few countries but no place comes close to our West coast friends.

Thx, I know... But most trading (items or cars) appear to be US only... Not looking for a US buyer, maybe someone local or at least european will see it... Whatever, it's worth the shot

Getting out... Not from Porsches, but from 928s.

I've been debating this with myself over and over since we moved to Sweden two years ago - With the 180% tax gone, I could suddenly get into cars that I could only dream of before.

Initially I wanted a Boxster, but the wife killed that plan when she found out it only had 2 seats. There're only two sportscars that I like that are 2+2 - Jaguar and 911 - I'm not old enough to drive a jag, so I started looking at 996 cabs for a while (want a cab, but don't like the pre 996 cabs) but hated the idea of paying 20K extra for two seats I'd hardly ever use.

Recently I realized that though the 928 has 4 seats, we've never, not even once, been out in it all 3 of us, even though I have a child seat mounted permanently - It seemed that "rarely" is "never" in this case, so I'm back to looking at 2-seaters (Once the kid(s) are old enough to sit in the car without the childseat, I'll reconsider ).

Last saturday I made the mistake of testdriving a 2005 987 S and, quite frankly, the 928 felt more like a bus than a sportscar after that.

I still love the 928, but it's come to the point where the 987 at 4 times the price is, to me, also 4 times the car. Oddly, it is also priced exactly the same as the 928 when I bought that in Denmark 6 years ago.

A couple of q's if you don't mind. I'm not very interested myself (I think), but a friend of mine is (as I have a nearly identical one, including A/C not working, and he's in love with her).

1) What research, if any, did you on the ABS and A/C problems?
2) Engine is 100% or has it got any minor issues (semi-cold start, frequent oil refills, tbelt light disabled, coolant leaks...)
3) Gbox is 100% or has it any not-so-good shifts?
4) How many kms on the rotors and pads?
5) Shocks?

Thanks a lot. I do travel around Europe a bit and perhaps we could met in a neutral place (eg: Nurgburgring ) to take a look at the car or even make a short test-drive outside the circuit.

PD: I've been offered (although I don't want to sell) that much for my much worse looking unit (bad cracks on the dash and pod) but you have to be extremly patient. If you try to sell it on a hurry, you will get half the money, at least this is how it works down here in Spain.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Niels:

I'm sorry to hear you leaving the 928 community - even though I understand that needs and wants may change over time. As they say: "The better is the enemy of the good..." Obviously you found something you like better.

In the back of my mind I had kind of hoped to meet you when I'm in your neck of the woods in early June. We'd have to coordinate that with Anders.

Either way I wish you best of luck in selling the car, in finding the right successor!

PS: That's a VERY cool looking house behind your 928! Hope it's yours!

1) No research on the A/C, but there are signs of "tracer" on the block, so I have to assume a leak. I tried jumping the ABS relay and the light did go out, but I haven't actually replaced the relay.
2) Engine is 100% good
3) Gbox appear to be 100% too. On very cold days, reverse might require a shift into 2nd first.
4) Pads nearly new, can't recall actual mileage on the rotors - I believe the front are fairly new, the rears might be due.
5) I have done nothing to the shocks, can't recall if PO did (I have invoices, so I can check).

I'd love to go to the ring again, but I'd be hard pressed to find an opportunity. And I believe you're right about selling in a hurry, so I won't .

Nicole,

I'm a little sad too, I really like the car (and the community in particular), and given an extra garage bay, I'd probably keep it. But maybe it won't sell, and I'll be stuck with it

I'd love to meet up if you're ever in/around the Copenhagen/Malmö area, just drop me a PM - or go through Anders, I guess he might still have my cellphone number.

Oh and thanks - Yes, the house is mine, glad to hear you like it It took most of my time the past two years, and I still need to finish a bit of tiling in the master bathroom, but I'll get there eventually

7 months later, almost to the day, the car finally sold!

Just thought I'd say farewell to everyone in here and thank you for all the help you've provided in the 6 years I had the car - without rennlist, my 928 ownership experience would surely have been a nightmare.

I am off to a period of "trying to live without a Porsche" - don't know when I'll be back in the family, but I do know it will not be in a 928. It's been a great experience, but there is just so many other models I'd like to try .

Good luck Niels,

Just because you don't have a 928, doesn't mean you have to leave.

I'm sorry to hear you are abandoning us! It was great to have you, and even greater to meet you and see your shark in its beautiful habitat pictured above!

Hopefully there will still be a chance to get together some time in the future. I told Anders I'll be in Sweden again in 2009, when the ABBA museum opens in Stockholm. Mabye I'll start in Stockholm and end in Copenhagen again...

Please tell everybody who knows and still likes me that I send my regards. And all the best for the whole family!!!
