My "new" 86.5 (long + pix)
So bought this in March and joined the list, and now I have finally started the project - the goal is to have the important mechanicals done by SITM (registered and reserved). Paid 3900, which took into consideration the usual really bad signs - no records, no spare, no tools, real testimony to caring owners! BUT- I figured for the money it would be worth it to see if I like the model, then if so I'll put a few bucks into it (= twice what I'll get out of it, who cares) and if I really fall in love maybe look for another better example later. I love to work on 'em, which is why I do this anyway... Got CD shop manuals and Kelly's book on the TB/WP, and started that project yesterday, looks pretty straightforward and think it should go well. Have to say, just sitting in it and looking at it in the driveway makes me feel damn good. The worst part is the paint job- a 20 foot plus a squint, and a color change from granitrot to black. We'll see about that one. Anyway, while waiting for the manuals, tweaked the sounds a little. It came with the Monterey and BQB 80 amp originally, but a PO had put in a JVC radio and some aftermarket speakers. Have always had McIntosh for home audio, couldn't really do that on my XJ40 (and the Alpine system I have is pretty good anyway) so I thought hmmm, now's a good time... Will post a pic in the thread about sound systems. Here I just want to reiterate what I said on joining- this list was a major part of the decision to buy the car, confirmed by the info (and other stuff) I have gotten from it in the last few weeks. Thanks! and here are some "befores" (hopefully I'll get to post some "afters" in the future):

Looks great - hope that the rest goes well.
I bought my '85 in a similar fashion - no records, etc. and so far everything has turned out fine. The timing belt project was not hard, just time consuming. Although that is probably because I refurbished the intake and vacuum lines, and, and while I was at it. Checked the crank end play, released the flex plate and all is good.
Keep us posted on your progress.

Who in their right mind would paint a Garnet Red Metallic 928 to black and do a poor job of it!!
My vote is to go back to the original color and ditch the side mouldings.

IMHO, it's all about the mechanicals on a point five. My 86.5, according to a old bodyshop guy, has 'been to the fair', but the drivetrain and suspension is sound for the most part.
It still can put out ~290RWHP with only a few mods (chips, X-pipe)! And it can still stop on a »Pfennig«, with those monster brakes.
