no you don't. I pushed mine in with my hand then gave it a few gentle taps with a very large socket

Hmmm OK I am a bit surprised. This counters all I have read. They sy the left cam shaft has a taper and slides on easier. But, the right has no taper and the tool helps to spread the seal over the shaft.
No offense but I think I will hope for some more feedback on this issue.

Thanks,

put some oil on the running /sealing surface of the cam and the seal gently work it onto the cam and tap it home with a large socket or piece of pipe that fits the OD of the seal , it should work out fine. otherwise you can use the flat side of a paint stirring stick and gently work around the edges flat side to the seal

PVC pipe caps (plumbing dept.) of various sizes work well in these situations

If you still have the old seal, flip it over, line it up and hammer on it instead. This will make sure the socket, PVC, or whatever does not cut the new seal.

Well, OK I will give it a try. Thanks for all your input. I was skeptical at first given all the feedback I have read about problems when not using the special tools.

Well, the socket and a bit of oil on the leading edge of the seal is perfect.
I had no trouble at all getting the seal on. It went on so well, that I have 100% confidence in the install. Thank a bunch to all. This network on Rennlist once again proves its value to me.
