Timing Belt Inspection
How do you check the timing belt of a 1982 928 Euro S? I've tried using the search function unsuccessfully, so if anyone can help me or post a link to the answer, I'd appreciate it.

For starter's you need to check the tension with either the aftermarket Kemp tool available at the big 3 ( or is it 4 or now 5) or the Porsche 9201 tool. While doing that, check for edge wear on the belt from rubbing. If the tension is okey and there is no rubbing, then the next question is "How long since it was changed?" If it's more than 5 years or 45K miles (the factory says 60K) then it's time for a change no matter what the tension is like. If it's rubbing, change it NOW! When you change the belt also check the cam gears for excessive wear, rebuild the tensioner, replace the rollers and tensioner plastic bushings and the water pump. The pump is optional; if you do all your own work it doesn't cost you anything to change it when it starts to leak/fail. If you have rubbing then I would change the water pump at the same time as you don't always know what's causing the rubbing. Most guys remove the radiator so it's a good time to do a coolant flush/change, maybe replace the front main seal and the oil pump seal if they show signs of leakage. You'll also have the distributer caps off so maybe rotors and caps, ignition wires, maybe all new drive belts etc. Lots of WYIT's can be done. How far and how deep depends on your time and wallet. One last thing. . . the new belt needs to be re-tensioned approximatly 1200 miles after installation.
Also find a good mechanic if you don't want to tackle this yourself. There are NO good 928 mechanics at any of the dealerships, and you don't want the new guys learning on your car!
