Are the European rental car companies putting GPS tracking devices in their cars? And if so, do they get a little cross if they find that your coordinates are inside the 'ring? Or do they not care as long as you pay for the optional full insurance?

Have a read of the link http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/carhire.html
As you can see , normal hire cars are a No No, but you can hire locally cars to drive on the 'ring

Now THAT was funny!

They gave you a hard time about those lug nuts, but it's good to see you have a great sense of humor.

Indeed, but last time I was at the Ring I walked around the car park talking to people & from my informal survey I would estimate that 40% of the drivers were there with hire cars.

Including one who had jumped out of the Karussell and bent his BMW quite badly.

I imagine one can go from London to the Ring in about the same time it would take me to go from Los Angeles to Phoenix. Thanks for the vids!

DrNick can probably burn DVD and send it for modest cost. I have better quality files on my PC if someone has place where they can be uploaded.

Hell of a risk though when the hire companies specifically exclude the 'ring.

I agree, I was not recommending this approach; simply stating what I saw.

Personally I prefer to drive my 928 around; I do not see the point of learning the Ring in a car that you do not own and use on a regular basis.
I am more interested to learn how my own car performs when it is near the limit.

BTW, there are a group of UK 928 owners at the Ring this weekend; hopefully they will post some fotos.

I found a foto of DrNick in action on page 7 of this link

Until they build a tunnel under the Atlantic...

The point is just to drive it. Period. I don't even need a 'fast' car. I'll take a Polo even. I could always settle for a Taxi ride.

Scott - well in theory its a similar distance - of course you'd get a wee bit wet on the way...

Driving through the channel tunnel could be an option of course - but its hard to keep the car on the rails!

(other options usually slow things down a bit)

How large? I have about 11GB of free space on my brothers hosting account right now. You could also BitTorrent them.

a typical American I am not, I know where countries (and even our own states) are located. I assumed anyone in a very unique RHD 928 filling up in Walloon Belgium had earlier in the day driven out to Folkstone, and 70-90 minutes later was in France, courtesy of the 90 foot long "channel cannon" that shoots cars, livestock, etc. out over the channel to france where they land on one of those giant airbags they use in Hollywood for stuntmen to fall into. Since France cracked down on using anglo words in product names it's now known officially as the sac rempli grand par air.
