Hey Chadster;

Do these covers have a rigid or semi-rigid wall or are they floppy fabric?

I ask because I was just on my way to the auto store to see if I could find a nice looking something to put the junk I need to carry in - like jumper cables, tools, chamese, etc. I saw that Case Logic has something like this. Then I remembered this tire cover and thought what nice looking general purpose storage it would make....

Bronto,
No, the wheelcovers are not rigid.

Hey Chaadster,

How about a slip-on (open-type) cover where we can still keep the wheel in the original spare-tire storage cavity under the hatch?

The cover wrap around the spare wheel and be will be held in place by an elastic or draw-string band at the bottom.

Are you still taking orders somewhere? Price still $90?

Andrew,
I just made these covers to satisfy my own need; that is to say, I'm not in the business of making stuff. Sorry.

Anyway, it seems like your wish would be pretty easy to fulfill, at least it sounds like a simple bag construction. I'd suggest that you track down a local tailor/seamstress and see what they can do for you.

Good luck!

Bronto,

This was pretty much a one-time deal for me. I wanted to get these made for me and Bigmac, and thought I'd throw the idea out there to see if there would be any interest or demand. Response seemed light, so I've pretty much dropped it.

Shoot me a PM with your color preference (sorry, no Op-Art/pascha!), though, and I'll go look and see if I can get the material still. If I can, then I'll gather the hardware and get it done for you! Oh, and "yes" $90 should cover it.

I got my chaadster-special wheel cover today, and I'm really impressed. Thanks Chaadster! Nice soft material, did a double take thinking it was leather. No, but it's nice. Nice badge too.

FWIW, I'm not using this for a spare tire. I'm using it for anchored, enclosed storage of the usual stuff - jumper cables, oil, tools, chamoise, umbrella, etc. Very nice.

I'm glad you like it, Bronto. So, have you made a rigid insert to hold the cover's shape? If so, what did you do?

Not yet. I wanted to wait until I got it to make sure the measurements were right, and now I'm travelling for the weekend. But there's a hardware store across from my office and before I got it I was looking for material to improvise with, and some plastic-like wallboard basing (not sure what it's really called) that looks like it will fit the bill. It comes in a roll and is about 5 inches tall, so I figure all get a couple of strips and glue something together.
