It was a package for the US market - basically the engine of the basic 928 with the spoilers, brakes, forged wheels, sports seats, and a few other goodies from the European S model. There was no "S" in the US until 83, and even then it had much less hp than the European versions.

How many of them? Who knows? Maybe the factory could extract it from their database, if it goes so far back and has the appropriate information available. I doubt that's the case, though...

Speaking of special competition options, were there any individual early cars modified by Porsche beyond the competition package? Someone told me of a car they had, it was a 78 modified by Porsche with clubsport like mods, no power seats, no sunroof etc. but one thing that stood out was a cast aluminum airbox. The car was bronze or something like that, anyone have any ideas what it was?

Competition Package was available in 1980.

and the competition package had less powerful of an engine, as it was the 4.5l instead of the 4.7l

IIRR it came late 1980 little after '81 MY production had started. October or November 1980 comes to mind. So its sort of '81.5-82 option same ways as '86.5 and '89 GT was middle of MY change.

These are very common in early ROW models and were also available in US.

My father has an addiction to collection automotive books. Every single book that mentions the 928 has the data wrong. Anywhere from the 5 liter engine in 1978 to 350hp across the model line from start to finish. The “928 buyers guide” has it listed as a 1981 option.
I’m sure if someone wanted the competition package late 81 they were still allowing it to go through on an 82 car. They were on their way to introduce that “package” on every 928 anyway for 1983.

It seams to be just a trim package. I’ve seen one particular 1981 928 with the competition package on the original sticker. This car does not have S brakes or LSD.

Every US 928 from 1978-1982 came equipped with the 4.5.

AFAIK, US cars did not get S brakes until '82, regardless, and LSD still had to be special ordered.

Note that US torque numbers are usually listed incorrectly because of a typo in the WSM.
Should be 255 ftlb or 348 Nm, not 265. The dealer Technical Data booklet shows the correct number.

Great Info thanks for sharing. I often woundered if my 1981 928 is one of these models. Were the competition pack cars only manuals?

I looked at am 80 with the competition package - it was on the sticker as well.

IIRC in 82 they increased the price of the comp package and took out the sports seats from the package. The SS became an option in there own right.

I have a 5 speed 82 with the sport package sans SS.

Quick Reply: how many 'competion package' 928 were there in 81?
