Default '82 No Start Problem

Went out yesterday (Sunday) a.m. hopped in my normally very reliable "82 and it wouldn't start. The symptoms are that it fires right away, but dies after a second or two.

It acts like a fuel pump relay problem, but I have 12v at terminal 30 & the fuel pump fuse is good. It does the same thing with the relay jumpered, i. e. with the fuel pump running, it will fire and then die after a second or two.

I've tried swapping in a different fuel filter (not new, but working when I changed it). Oh, and there is gas in the tank. The only other thing I can think of is that I washed the car on Saturday, but didn't drive it after washing it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

hi james
the old story again...revisited
i guess we all had that sort of trouble at some point.

try to check the injector relay.
are all fuses ok?
do you have 12v at the fuelpump terminals?
try to jump the fuel pump relay.
then with ignition off- put 12v directly to the fuel pump. does it hum? if yes , then change polarity for a second. it will make the pump run backwards and maybe dislodge something blocking the pump.

i got a few more things, but you might wanna start with those first

Sounds just like mine was. Fired and died, fuel pump noise present.

It was the fuelpump that was gone. replaced the outer fuelpump and problem solved.

You should check if you got any fuelpressure on the "inspection plug" on the passenger side fuelrail.

An '82 only has one fuel pump.

Sounds like your injectors aren't firing.
It initially starts up on the cold start injector, and then dies when that shuts off.

Green wire?

As in the O2 sensor wire? Would this keep it from running?

Is there a way to test the injector relay with a jumper like we do with the FP relay? It appears to be a unique part number, so it doesn't look like I can swap in any of the other relays.

No, the O2 wire wouldn't keep it from running.
The green wire goes connects to the distributor and basically tells the system when to fire the injectors.

You can jump the FI relay, you just have to jump 3 contacts instead of 2 like you do for the fuel pump.
Like this:

except I think it's really supposed to be the 3 across like shown circled here:

although it shouldn't make a difference, either should work.

If the green wire is bad, jumping the FI relay won't help, but it's worth a shot.

Obviously, you want to chase all the other stuff too... but my four-week adventure started same as yours... and ended in an unlikely place.

A fuel injection "Noid Light" is helpful in troubleshooting too. Harbor freight sells a kit for cheap. Roughly, here's my progression:
Fuel relay,
FI relay,
grounds cleaned
alarm disabled,
green wire working,
sensor ohm checks, temp, barn door, etc.
rechecked readings at the FI brain, including power and grounds
all inputs present, still no outputs...
FI brain replaced, all ok

Thanks everyone.

I jumpered the fuel injector relay and it fired right up.

Took a day to get a new relay from my friendly parts guy and now it's back to normal. I love it when I can bring a 25 year old car back to life with a $16 part!
