On Normy's car they were probably trying to compensate for an aged MAf, which will run weak. S2's are well known for being much more sensitive to a weak running MAF.
Although it will cheer up the mixture a bit, an aged MAF suffers from a slower response time.

Not sure where you are on this, is it still running rich. I had that problem w/'85. After the O2 is checked, I would check for vacuum leak as next cheapest thing to look at.

Oh lord I'm not even going to touch that one...
Anyway, I've been out of town on business for the past week, so I only had a chance to drive the car a few miles after I removed the broken resistor. It definitely has more driveability, and NO black smoke on acceleration. Power wise, it seemed about the same.
I installed an RRFPR late last year, and now that it looks like all the bugs are finally worked out [though I've said that before...], maybe its time to take it to a dyno and try to tune it properly. More on this later. What should an S2 5 speed with an Ott X and an RRFPR make on the dyno?
