Suddenly no 1st, 3rd, or reverse. Why??
I am posting this for CeeDee. He is currently driving home with only a few gears. He said that he lost 1st, 3rd and reverse. If he tries to put the gearshift lever in any of these positions it will pop out when he releases the clutch. The other gears work fine. He can also get it into 3rd on a downshift from 4th.
Any ideas???????

Probably the gear mechanismm locator cup at the front is falling apart. Tell him to try to get it into gear using 2 hands on the stick (I know tricky) OR grab the stick in the middle (not by the **** on top) and pull it into gear managing the angle of the stick to be as intended - see if that helps?
basically when the cup falls apart your pivot point gets out of whack - or in the worst case is totally gone... BTDT

The ballcup he is talking about is on top of the TT towards the front of the car. It cannot be seen from inside the car, and you can only see a glimmer of it from underneath the car.

this is what it looks like
any ideas?

alright got it all sorted out.
didn't have to take anything off . but the dustcover. (the only casualty, apart from the bushings)
i went to an autoparts store and bought bushings that had the same outside size as the old bushing
then i drilled the inside to fit the same as the old bushing.
now. the new bushing is not as hard of a rubber. so i don't think it will keep up for another 30 years.
maybe just a year. or a week. but now i know how to tackle it and i'll venture out and get some hard bushings that will fit exacly.

Hmm I replaced the front cup a couple years ago and still have a very loose shifter, maybe, just like you, my rear coupler is toast too. Good thing to know that its easy to get to. I'll look at it in a few days!
