Default 1988 S4 overheating, fans not running

My 1988 S4 has developed an overheating problem. The gage had been creeping towards the upper white line at times, but today it went over. Couple of years ago I had replaced all 4 temperature sensors and the thermastat ... so I don't think it's any of those. I know that the fans work because when I turn off the car, they come on momentarily. However, when hot and run in the driveway, they are off (I did push in the hood-open switch. Any ideas where to look? Can I rig the fans to run when the engine is on as a temporary measure to get by for a bit?

Any advice is always appreciated.

Check the hood switch perhaps it has failed.

I had the power stage fail sometime ago. The finned box on the very front of the car. I replaced FETS of the power stage and it ran fine ever after. The other option besides what Jim said, is a faulty controller. It resides next to the pass. seat. Sometime is is as simpel as a loose connector. Check if the fans run when AC button pushed...

Theo

Thanks Jim and TheoJ for your feedback. I checked all your suggestions and found some corrosion on one of the connectors to the control box next to the passenger seat. Cleaned it up and just took it for a test spin ... the gage didn't budge much from the centre position.

I love the 928 community!!
