Did any shops try to talk you out of buying your first 928?

After reading another thread about getting a PPI in Chicago, I came up with this topic. Like in the other thread, when I called a local (in my case Detroit)area shop about a PPI last year (the one I used before when I had my early 911s), they tried to talk me out of buying a 928. They told me they are very expensive to fix and have a lot of electrical issues. They told me to buy a 911 instead. I had to defend what I liked about the 928 to the mechanic. I would have thought that they would have supported my interest, and thought they would look at me as a potential future service customer. Instead they tried to tell me not to buy one. What this did is **** me off, and I will not call or do any business with them again. I spent almost $4000 there with my 911. Anyone have a similar situation?
FYI, I really enjoy driving and working on my 928 and don't regret buying it. And when I bought my 928, I didn't use them for my PPI (I used a mechanic friend and a fellow Rennlister).

I think they were telling you that they didn't have anyone there with 928 expertise.
My Bimmer mechanic told me not to buy one. He said that were great cars but that they were made for the open road, not around town. And that they were expensive to fix (after charging me $1100 for a new FI computer). I reminded him that I commute on my motorcycle and travel often around California. Didn't have much to say after that. Great guy though; I've referred many a BMW owner to him. And he as a '64 389 tripower engine (GTO) stashed under his workbench.

Bronto, I think you may be on to something. They also told me all 928s have interference engines, which I know is not true. Mine is a non-interference engine, which is one reason I bought it.

At least a mechanic that knows he doesn't like 928s is honest. I have been to a few who like them who are down right dangerous. A bad mechanic working on a 928 can exacebate the problems that a 928 might have.
BTW, they are not as simple to run or maintain as a 911, and some mechanics will try to steer you away from them because they have seen clients buy run down examples and sink upwards of 10K $ trying to make the pig sing. You want a good 928, and you want to find a mechanic who will steer you straight, just like you would want a heart specialist for surgery. Unless you do the work yourself that is.

Yes, when I bought my 1982 928, the mechanic told me that I should get rid of it, and get a 911. It was funny that when I stopped taking my car to him, I received a post card from them reminding that my 928 was due for oil change and check up
Needless to say, I never went back

Yeah, the service manager at a shop I frequent gave me the horror/warning speech when I told him I was looking at a 928. This was as a friend, not in a professional context, but still...

There are two local well known german repair shops.....one I knew worked on 928's and liked them....when I was shopping I talked to them about nice 928's possibly for sale....they didn't know of any...
The other shop...I talked to the guy at the counter & he gave me the "be afraid...be very afraid" speech....on & on about all the problems & how 911's are better......honestly if numnuts would have said "Personally I prefer 911's & these are the reasons why," or even took me for a drive in one...then maybe I would have given his "speech" some thought.....of course no matter what he said my answer was gonna be
"if I wanted a VW I would buy a VW"

When I bought my first 928 I called my normal independant Porsche repair shop and asked about a PPI. He told me they didn't touch 928's so I Martianed the seller down another 5K and bought it with my own inept PPI.
The kicker is I had spent over $18,000 with that shop over the previous four years, just not on a 928.
It was obvious to me they badmouthed the idea of a 928 because it wasn't a vehicle they were going to make money off me with.
Like my Grandpappy always said;.. son he said, ...."Ifin' your a wonderin' why,...just follow the money".

Most shop owners around here **** their pants if you expect them to diagnose a flat tire on a VW Golf. I didn't consult any of them because I don't except to patronize their businesses with my car.

Last september I called a local german repair shop that had worked on 928s before. So I went there to get an estimate on changing out the oil pan gasket, front main seal and camtower seals. $2400 was the estimate. He said I'll call you in two weeks...never heard from him again...so off I went to do myself...(of course with a few other 928ers as well)!!

Before I bought mine, I spoke to a couple local Porsche shops (one with two 928s parked in front when I stopped in). The first mechanic's eyes lit up when I told him what I was looking for and he told me they were beautiful, wonderful cars, but you need to keep up the maintenance. Then he told me a few things to look for while shopping, and also contacted me when one of his customers was considering selling his 928.
The second shop didn't try to discourage me and pointed me to a couple they knew of that were for sale.
I haven't taken my car to either yet, but I stopped by the first (Joe Wright - Wright's European) to ask him if he was okay with me bringing him parts to install and he said no problem, then gave me a few tips on which brake pads he preferred. Then he wanted to get the info on Injection Labs for rebuilding MAFs for his customers.
