As ROG and Imoo are suggesting, lifters could be sticky also. Try flushing.

Marvel or Magic in my book.
Use about 3 quarts and run for maybe 100 to 250 miles and then do an oil change.
Has always cured noisy lifters for me.

Started Brad's new (to him) 82 up after sitting for a year and the lifters were noisy.
MMO did the trick and she runs very smooth now.
Same as snake oil - I was very sceptical until my friends here in DFW said try it - I buy it by the 6 gallon box now. Use it in all my cars in smaller quantities.
Very good for cleaning the fuel system as well and a lot cheaper than techron.

Hmmmm.. I would say that nails it, if i had to bet. The PO did let the car sit for the last few months while they were trying to sell it.. That has to be it. Ill give it a try!

Thanks guys.

The problem is not normally the non return valve (ball bearing held in place with a spring) It's the O ring that seals the chamber the valve is in. O ring goes hard, lets the oil on it's way to the heads leak out into the "cambox" reduces the pressure to the lifters so they don't work.

I fired up mine yesterday and no noise at all. It has been sitting untouched for at least 6 months. Finally made room in the garage to bring her in for the headgasket change. However when the parts car was first fired up it did have a littel ticking that went away after the engine warmed up, but that car was sitting for better part of 6 years.
