Default New Macassar ebony interior panels

Hi,
I have been meaning to replace my zebrawood interior panels with Macassar ebony for quite a while. I have a brown inerior and this color combo is much better.

The flash makes the wood look washed out and more yellow than in real life. The wood is expensive $300, but I had a gift card so...

Hey Dave,

That looks really nice. I like the contrast in the grain, that is a rare wood.

Did you make it all yourself?

Yes, Mike I did make these myself. I am lucky to have a hardwood lumber place about 3 miles from my home. Owl Hardwood, Des Plaines, Illinois.

Thanks for your kind words. I thought about offering to make these for other people but it is pretty time-consuming and requires custom fitting to the mating parts and surfaces. Without the car that these are going into, I'm afraid there would be some tweaking left to do.

Dave,

Looks great. How many hours did it all take? Did you have to stain/urethana as well? What part of town are you from? I grew up in PR 2 blocks north of the Pickwick.

It probably took me 10 hours. Most of the time was spent on the panel involving the radio, a/c and clock opennings. I used no stain, but applied maybe 6 coats of gloss clear Krylon. I am on Greenwood, 6 blocks south of Touhy. Fond memories of afternoons at the Pickwick Theater.

Very nice

I have been thinking of maybe doing something like this in African Blackwood to go with the black leather in my 81. I have enough material to make the door inserts but need more for the console.

I started with door panels and it looked very good. I considered stopping right there and still think it would be perfectly fine. Does Blackwood have enough grain to satisfy your 928 decor?

I like it also...Ziricote would also have looked nice. I would also consider Black Palm.

The grain on Blackwood is very faint and I doubt you would even be able to tell the difference between it and the black leather unless you were up close.

It looks like a great job. Terrific choice on the wood. Most of the time wood looks lousy in a 928, but that looks classy. To make it perfect you have to have a super smooth, almost plastic finish on it. A bigger pic would be nice.
