I have an '84 Euro. There is a red lensed light just to the left, and a little lower than the plate. Does anyone know what this light is for? I have a rear fog light switch on the dash, although this light does not seem like it would do much. A 3rd brake light maybe?
Thanks!

That red lensed light is the rear fog light. You even mentioned that you had a rear fog light swtich. If its still hooked up and working when its foggy out. that light will light uo brighter then the tailights so that oncoming drivers behind you can see you.

It's definitely a fog light. Maybe someone disabled it at some point or put a wrong bulb into it.
AFAIK it's supposed to have a 21 Watt Bulb, and should only turned on in thick fog (not in the rain).
UK models had this light on both sides of the bumpers.

Arrgh - Nicole too right - thank god we don't have fogs allowed in the US!
When I lived in England - about the only time you would see these on was driving on the Freeway (motorway) in the rain --- always made me curse the %#^#%%@!* idiots... with these in front of you you can see nothing! brake lights dissapear!
In the US it would be even worse!
I always wanted to find these guys and smash their fog lights with a hammer... This has to be the most abused and - worst when abused - safety feature ever dreamed up (.. due solely to the human factor)
I had fog lights on all my cars and used them in fog maybe 10 times in 15 years of driving in th UK.
Disabling the fogs would be a DOT import compliance requirement. For once I think they got it right! - you should have to take a competence test to qualify to have them... still makes me mad today...

IIRC these things turned up in the UK about 15-20 years ago following a horrendous pile-up in fog which involved about 80 vehicles. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time and a few manufacturers, notably Volvo, started fitting them as standard equipment. Higher intensity brake lights controlled by a switch and only for use in fog might have been better.
