Default 83 928 vs 99 Mustang Cobra?

a friend at work has a 99 cobra+cold air intake+exhaust. Went for a ride today and it was pretty quick. I have a 83 928S w a 84 euro motor, headers+borla. He maintaned that theres no way my car could beat his in any scenario. By the way his car corners like crap so +1 there. Had me thinking of all the things I could take him on. I figure I have cornering, class,15 years, and no way he could beat the top end.

once I am legally on the road it will be intresting to see who has 0>60,0>100, 60>100,etc.

hmmm

1999 Mustang Cobra? A car to be consumed. Found at a junkyard near you 10 years from now, what's your point?

It's faster than your 1983 Porsche 928. Doesn't handle half as well, but if you force your thoroughbred into a bar fight with a local plastic mustang...you might even be able to prove a few things.

Take him to the track.

Put up $100.00 and see how he runs on it. He will be nice and happy to take you up on that, then let the 20 year old car eat him. Be sure to make it over 5 laps. His brakes will heat up, fail and you can breeze by him.

Keep it off the streets.

Its probably quick but not fast...your car will have longer legs in the end. Plan on being even or looking at his rear bumper until past a 1/4 mile or so... thats when his 3.XX + rear end runs out of steam.

even so... an 83 on a 99.... if he does not completely smash you. he shoudl still be ashamed that a 20 yr old car is even running close. Its kinda like being neat up by an old lady

if i would ever dare this . then i'd make sure my leads are new and new airfilter. all vacuumlines changed and great oil everywhere.
short, i would make sure my car runs at least as good as it did , when the niner was new.
even then chances are, that the mustang will leave you sitting there .

A couple of years ago, "a friend of mine" with an '85 EURO got in a small caravan of 3 cars going down the interstate about 110-120. The other 2 cars were a newer Audi, and a 2000ish Mustang Cobra. The Audi looked quite stable, however..."my friend" decided to keep his distance from the 'stang. It was so squirrely and unstable at triple digits, that he was afraid that the thing was going to lose control at any minute....even going in a straight line at that speed.

As said...the ONLY thing he's likely to beat you at is a 1/8 - 1/4mile straight line drag race. HOWEVER - driver ability can come into play in any other style 'race'. KEEP IT ON THE TRACK...challenge him to an AX - you can easily wax his azz, if you know how to drive.

FWIW - In AX...MY '85 Euro is usually 2-3 seconds faster then any 'stang on a 60-65 second course.

Have him put $100 on the table then race at a 60 MPH rolling start on the Highway from a mile marker to the next mile marker - easy $100 for you.

You might want to bring a magazine to read while waiting for him at the 'finish line'...

The only place I see Mustangs at the track are in my rear view mirror... except for the factory built supercharged 650hp race car..

Mustangs are weird, it doesn't take a lot of money to turn one into a serious track car. But in stock form they are horrible.

99 cobras had the "305" hp motor......since you have an 84 Euro motor...310hp....in a car that weighs about the same....it should be close....his lower gears will help sub-100mph accleration..but above that the 928 would pull away....

I don't think this will be an easy race to win. I, personally, would not do it. Do it at the track though. Be safe. Keep it off the street.
