My 1990 928GT has the same noise, 1400-1600 rpm, accelerating ,starting off in a 3rd , I thought it was the mufflers.

That seems like ALOT of metal shavings- When I changed mine, I had no shavings. I used Mobil-1 Full synthetic 75W90, with excellent results. Good luck

I had a rattle under the car that would appear when moving from a stop that would fade away when I rode the clutch a bit; the higher the rev's the less rattle I heard. One day I noticed while the door was open that when engaging the clutch I heard a similar rattle, just not so loud.

The PO had replaced the clutch and pilot-bearing but in the receipts no mention of the throw-out bearing. I applied to the shaft the TO bearing rides on a lithium grease and it did help but replacing it fixed the rattle. I could've driven it for a while because it was shifting fine but I hate rattles... My ride's an 85.

Well, seems like it might be the clutch, may be I should try changing the complete cluch assembly including all bearings.
Will see about that; in case I do, I will take the Shark back home for a visit to the Schnellbahn and Weissbier and get it done properly.

A worn or missing ball cup bushing on the end of the clutch fork can cause the fork to rattle.

Default My conclusion !

Replaced the motor mounts and the noise is unchanged.

In addition to the "grinding" noise, i have the whining noise from the worn cup on the coupling arm. This quite another beast though. It disappears when i rest the foot on the clutch pedal.

I maintain my statement that the "grinding" noise is a design issue, and is not e wear / usage issue. No oil, magentic pickup, or performance has indicated any kind of degradation of the cars mechanical condition, which can be related to the noise.

I am going to reduce (hopefully eliminate) the noise by installing an RMB.

Ragner,

The fact that it goes away when you rest your foot on the pedal is an indication of a pilot bearing according to my research. That happened to me and I replaced the whole kit-n-kaboodle, but if you do some searches on the noise and cross reference it with the fact that it is noticeable when you remove your foot from the pedal in neutral, and goes away when you apply it, you'll find your answer.

The exhaust mod may mask the problem, but I don't see how it will fix it. YMMV

This thread was really helpful for me to diagnose the source of the sound coming from the clutch area of my '91 GT. The technical expertise on this board is peerless.

Thanks much,
Eric

Just to add to this, both my former '86 5-speed and my '91GT have this rattling sound in gear before 1,500RPM. It's usually more pronounced in 3rd gear. I think this is normal for all 5-speed 928's. To me it sounds like it's coming from the torque tube, but it may come from the transmission and the TT could be amplifying it.
