Default Windshield washers-fine points

I am going through my 928 fixing all those little jobs that have been neglected over the years. I am just finishing my windshield washes and I have a few fine point questions about the design. The intensive cleaner tank has a vent with a rubber hose that changes to clear plastic and ends up under an electrical harness clamp midway in the engine bay on the passenger side. Why do they need to vent in such an unusual way? My guess is that this method prevents throwing out fluid during high speed cornering. I have discovered that the windshield pump and the intensive cleaner pump have a tee in the line that goes to the windshield nozzles. One side of the tee returns fluid to the tanks through a built in restricter. Mine was installed incorrectly preventing intensive cleaner from going to the windshield. My guess is that the purpose of this design is to prevent stalling of the pumps if the nozzles get plugged, since these two pumps are positive displacement pumps. Am I right on this one? The headlight washer pump is a centrifical design.

I dunno.
Just checked chapter 92 of the factory (worthless) manuals and there is NOTHING on the windshield washer system. $1200 for this **** ?

Bruce, sorry you paid that figure for the paper. There is some precious stuff in there, but generally not on lesser systems like wwasher. Check the new visitor thread here for Jim Morehouse info. He has a set of cds for $70 IIRC. Besides the manuals it has a slew of tech papers and a video on TB replacement. And the PET guide for parts, so it is a good deal.

Check the PET - it shows exactly how to connect both washer system and intensive fluid system. The design uses 4 valves to prevent cross contamination between both systems.

Default Windshield washer Reservoir - leaking

Hi folks,
Recently got my '84 928 and loving it.
Slowly repairing the minor probs, and would appreciate any advice.

1. How buy a replacement for the reservoir - The windshield tank is leaking through, and I cant easily find a replacement online. Any suggestions on best way to find? Or is this somethign I can just repair (perhaps seal it with some tape?) Perhaps someone parting out an '84?

2. The 2nd "special" windshield washer doesnt work, doesnt emit any sound when the button under the dash is pressed...Ive checked the fuses, all ok. Is the next step to check power to the motor? Is it a separate motor, or does the main windshield washer motor power both? The main one works, but not the 2nd one.

3. What do you fill the 2nd special washer tank with? Can I get away with just ordinary washer fluid? (once I get it working)

Many many thanks!

1) www.928intl.com has tanks. They also have the special fluid listed on, but I'm not sure if it is available.

2) This is a way-out possibility, but I just found this to be the case on my '89... Check that the relay in socket IX is the correct one (by part number). The relays in sockets IX and XI were reversed in my car for some reason (an easy mistake to make considering the way the relay sockets are labeled). Switching them back got the secondary washer system to work. If not, then disconnect the pump connector and hook up a multimeter to the terminals. Hit the button and see if you get power. If you do, get a new pump ($40 or $60 or so).

3) The secondary tank is supposed to take "Porsche Special Silicon Remover" fluid it it (see above). No point in putting regular fluid in the secondary washer reservoir - it doesn't stream the fluid, it spits it in 3 or 4 short bursts when you press the button.

Good luck!

Wow, "Porsche Special Silicon Remover"!!! I'm inspired! I don't think I've ever even used my windshield washers, but tomorrow, I'm gonna check this out.

88SE and 90GT it works all by itself - push the button and the special fluid squirts and the wipers wipe 3 times. Now how do you get the special fluid out of your eyes - I tried this in the garage standing at the side of the cars.

Jon - yes you are right - my mistake - they work independently.

Either the regular washers or the intensive washers will trigger the wipe-while-wash 3 wipe thing - the combination is actually done in the intensiver washer relay - so if you remove it you will no longer get the wipe-while-wash feature on the main washers either... thats what I was thinking of.

So they are somewhat interdependant - just not what I said...

You do need the special 1 off relay for this feature though.

This pump is integrated into the intensive washer tank - its underneath - take the tank out - easy.
