Default Old manifold paint removal, need help

My powder coater tried to chemically remove the old paint from the manifold of my 1994 GTS. Outside he could remove the old paint with sandblasting however there is a problem with the inside. The old paint is like a hard plastic kind of substance, anyone have suggestions? Included some pics.

Thanks Robert 1994 GTS midnightblue, the Netherlands

Did the powder coater try using a media to blast it?? Of course a stiff wire brush and lots of elbow grease should get it done too!

Dear Geoff and Brain,
I think that it is a different paint. It is a sort of plastic, between the aluminium and the plastic is oil and the sand that the powder coater used to remove the paint on the outside of the manifold. Is it an option to heat the manifold to 400 celcius to get the old paint off?

Be EXTREMELY CAREFUL about using sandblasting on the manifold. You must make extra-sure that you get every bit of sand and other abrasive debris out of the manifold, or risk some serious engine damage. There's also a serious risk of ruining the flappy bearings by blowing sand through them.

Chemical strip is usually the safest method of paint removal.

try jasco stripper from the harware store... or some of the industrial jelly type ones...

do not get it on your skin...

The old paint is more like some mm thick plastic layer. I tried to use some chemical paint remover but only the top layer seems a little bit damaged due to this stuf. In the last picture I showed a piece of the layer that brake loose from its surface when I manipulated with a screwdriver. Is heating the thing an option?

Robert

I got most of the paint off an S4 manifold using a Karcher pressure washer. At the start the paint was almost intact but as I cleaned off the grease the paint started flaking off and by the time I was finished 90% of the paint was gone.

Just find an edge of the paint, direct the water jet at that and the paint may just peel off.

It gets interesting in all the nooks and crannys as the water jet gets blasted back at you - wear goggles.

You can heat it up to the same temperature as the cure temperature for the powder coat and see what happens. In my case it was a combination of heat and media blasting to get the paint off, but in my case it was an '85 so different parts/shapes.

Default Update with pics

Manifold was heated and the caoting on the inside burnt to ashes (pics). Got to make it clean now and tomorrow to the powder coater. Hope to show the results end of this week.

What temperature and what time did you need to get the plastic stuff off?

Best regards

I hope you did not heat for a long period of time. When I outgas mine I just put it in the over at 400 degrees for 10-15 min and it does not do anything to the powder coat left behind. So far I had great success removing the old paint with paint stripper from homedepot and a 2500 psi pressure washer.I bought a high pressure media blaster to do that but I end up returning it.

Heating temparature was about 400-450 degrees wich was reach in 3 stages of 150 degree for about 30 minutes each. Old coat came of for the last bits I used the high pressure water. New powder coat and new letters from Nicole gave a better than new result.
