Hi Robert,
How is the paint job on your manifold holding up? I am about to repaint mine but your post doesn't mention if the heating for removing paint is 450 degree in farenheit or celsius. I am presuming C as you post from the Netherlands - Is that the case ? I think ignition point for pure magnesium is about 430C.
Can you also tell me what process you used to repaint, was it powder coat or primer + finish coat ? Any detail would be greatly appreceated.
Thanks

First I tried chemically stripping it, that took alot off the tank was only at 150 degrees, then I put it the parts washer and bead blasted it with plastic media. It took all the paint off even inside the little tubes.

Hi Ray,

Thanx for your response. Indeed it was celsius, took it to a guy who is a specialist in alu, he also makes some parts for the new Airbus 380. I powder coated the manifold and cam covers and the paint is holding up very good. It was a lot of work but working on this can is as much fun as driving it.

All the best from the Netherlands.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys,
I feel confident to go ahead now, the plan is heat clean + teflon coat inside and powder coat exterior. Your advice is greatly appreceated.
Cheers
Ray

Dear Ad,

Nice website. Die manifold en cam covers van jou kunnen ook een poedercoatje gebruiken. Lovely green car you have there. Groeten uit Groningen

Hello Robert,
Groeten uit Capelle aan den IJssel!
Can you explain to me why the inside of the manifolds was painted? And did you do that again after removing the old paint?
I don't think I will have the intake manifolds powdercoated. It will look like "een aap met een gouden ring" if you know what I mean.

Hello Ad,

I read somewhere that the inside of the manifold was painted and offered an extra 5 hp on the GTS. I did not powdercoat the inside of the manifold and I did not test the hp. Maybe some day I will.

Unhappy

Hi Guys,
What NOT to do!
I took a (spare) camcover to local "Heat clean" contractor, set Temp. 500C
Result - Ammonia smelling ash and 2 round lugs.
Obviously there is a reason for staging the temp. and not going over 450C. I think I will go back to paint stripper for the real job.
Cheers
Ray
