It will smell a tad bit rich without the cats.

I forget who it was, but I recall reading where someone had a steel rod accidentally fall into their cats several times until there was notihng left inside. Damn shame! You really need to be careful, 928 cats attract a lot of negative attention.

My '83 has the stock exhaust, minus cats. The PO had a custom y pipe put in the cats place. My car has a bit of a rumble, but isn't too loud (in my opinion). There is a little odor, but nothing very serious. Overall it is good, but I may get something that flows better later.

Let me rephrase: The PO had the cat fall off and temporily put a y pipe on.

The cats, air pumps, and possibly the air conditioning may be falling off my '88 S4 at some point this summer (no emissions testing in my area - ka-ching!).

Ah ...."In Texas, when a vehicle hits 25 y/o, you are emissions exempt." I think you maybe no longer required to test but I believe there are no "exemptions" especially from FEDERAL LAWS. The fine for emissions tampering is $2,500 for an individual and $25,000 for a business per violation. Fortunately for many the federal laws are seldom enforced.

Texas official site..."Definition of "Tampering"
" Tampering is removing or making inoperable any system or device used to control emissions from a motor vehicle engine. The motor vehicle is defined as any self-propelled vehicle designed for transporting persons or property on a street or highway. The only exception to the tampering rule is the need to install a new certified emission control system or device that is equally effective in reducing vehicle emissions.

Tampering may include, but is not limited to:

Removing the catalytic converter, air pump, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, or doing anything to keep them from working properly, such as disconnecting vacuum lines and electrical or mechanical parts of the pollution control system.

Adjusting any element of a car or truck's emission control design so that it no longer meets the manufacturer's specifications.

Installing a replacement part that is not the same in design and function as the part that was originally on the vehicle.

Adding a part that was not originally certified on the car, such as installing a turbocharger. " ... Interesting that they specifically mention add on Turbo chargers as ILLEGAL in Texas ...

Legal or not, a 928 without cats emits at least 20 times the toxic fumes as a 928 with cats. And newer cars emit even less toxic fumes.

If you are "only" driving 5000 miles per year without cat, you pollute as much as if you drove 100k miles with cat, or as much as if you had cats and were followed by 19 or more of the same cars.

Now, imagine only 50 rennlisters taking off their cats. Makes 50 x 20 = 1000 times the pollution of the 50 cars otherwise.

AFAIK, Houston is a high smog area.

The sad thing about such definitions is that they also don't allow improvements in the sense of more efficient pollution controls.

For example, you could replace a ceramic cat with a high flow metal cat, get lower emissions (and more power), and still be illegal. Or one could add some high flow pre-cats in the downpipes and significantly improve cold start emissions - but that would also be illegal. That's wrong!

At the very least there should be a reasonable way to legalize such improvements - maybe get some kind of approval document or sticker that you'd show at the emissions test.
