Restoration pix of our 23 year old 928S (new pix)
After some deliberation and great input from some board members here, we went ahead with a local body shop guy who came with very good grapevine reviews.
He had the car for two weeks and took some photos of the process. Apparently, the yellow stuff is zinc chromate, which he said was necessary in places for adhesion. I bought some new taillights as well, which the guy installed.
The results appear (at first glance, at twilight) to be pretty awesome. All I need is a little sunshine to get some final result pics. I hope the old boy feels as good as he looks. Still plenty of TLC work to do 'neath the hood.

When I did mine I jammed everything so there would be no lines. I took off all the trim, mirrors, hood, fenders, doors, hatch a looot of work. I spent a shatload in broken trim and roten robber though.

So your painter is leaving on the side moldings and the front and rear covers? Do you know if he is planning on masking the black strip between the covers or if he is painting over it?

I know he did not remove the side strips. But in fairness, he never advertised this as a full repaint. It is my poor descriptions that lead to that confusion.
BTW Perry, have you gotten your smile back about your shark?

And, as you can tell, protective covering was put over Tom Cruise, Anthony Michael Hall, and Michael Keaton during the painting process.
Friday is supposed to be sunny and almost 50. It sure would be nice to see the old boy out in some sunshine. One cool thing is that we can see the details of the garage door guiderails in the front hood reflections now.
Peace,
Tim

The guy was very straightforward with us. He felt that since we regularly drive the car, it was not worth getting a 7-10K full repaint. Perhaps for a show car, but I enjoy driving the car waaay to much to store it away.
The next couple of months will be the litmus test to the quality of the job.
CeeDee - are you considering a restoration on yours?

I had mine done recently. I chose the job 1 step down from concours - good, but not crazy $. It needed new front and rear bumper covers, so those came off. He also removed the sun roof panel, the rubbing strips, the door handles, mirrors dismanlted, door locks, headlight covers, rear quarter windows, taillights , side markers, sill trims, roof side strips, screen trims, base of screen panel.
He painted to the inside edge of the door jamb (ie up to the carpet). In a couple of places the fenders needed cracks welded up as well. Cost a few 100 extra in new screen trims(kinked in removal), sill clips, and a new sunroof seal etc. All up about 5 weeks elapsed, and $7k. Only issue I have is the sunroof seal is tight, and needs some exercise to start it compressing so the roof will go right up, and he re-used the rear bumper cover beading, and some old overspray is visible, if you look for it. Altogether very happy. Then I spent another $2.5k on having the interior leather refurbed....wonder where this is all going.
