How much Oil in Intake Plenum is Normal?
condition as "normal". The condition being oil inside the intake plenums.
How much is normal? Is there any way to stop it?
What you see in the picture is after both sides were drained onto
the newspaper.

Go to Louie Ott's website as he was able to reduce this issue on the earlier cars by creating a vent drain to the crank case. This event is actually a good thing for different reasons. No matter, the engine runs fine regardless. As stated, stomp her a few times to produce some serious suck...like from 0-120.

This oil is over a year old, only around 2K miles though, she's overdue, I know. Waiting for spring.
The oil coming off the dipstick looks a lot nicer than what was in the plenums.
Thanks for the Louie Ott website tip : http://www.performance928.com/cgi-bi...ss_parent=1128
So I understand what's happening. Right now I don't want to take apart the entire intake to install
a baffel or stainless steel wool. The steel wool in the system scares me anyway.
If I'm clear then taking it to redline would only suck the oil out of the Driver's side plenum on my
86, because there is no outlet on the passenger side.
Due to the fact that I've still got a really long 'to do' list before I even think of Louie Ott's fix.
I'm going to have to get in the habit of draining these guys. The risk is Detonation right? I've
heard about that risk with 928s being pushed for racing applications. How bad is this risk for
normal driving? I might of missed it, but for all the 928 info/tips I've read this is the first time
I've found out I need to drain my Plenums and that seems odd.

Remove the oil filler cap, drop the stainless steel wool into the little basket and put the cap back on.
Maybe max 30 seconds even on a bad hair day

Don't think I have one on my '85. There is a baffled plate where the filler neck meets the block. These are NLA and incorporate the seal. Please check that some PO hasn't removed it and just put gasket material to create a seal. If I tried to stuff stainless steel wool down the filler, it would end up in the crankcase. Ouch!Glenn
