Default 928 Event - July 14 and 15 in Pittsburgh

Posted on behalf of Edward G. Rice - egr@sgkpc.com

Greetings 928OC Friends - Now that the spring thaw is just around the corner, and we are having thoughts of pulling our cars out of storage, it is time to plan an event for this summer! For those of you who don't know who I am, I recently volunteered to be the Regional Contact ("Den Mother") for the Western PA Region of the 928OC.

The event that I have in mind is the giant car show at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, to be held this year on the weekend of July 14 and 15, here in Pittsburgh, PA, centrally located at Schenley Park. The web link for the PVGP is www.pittsburghvintagegrandprix.com (www.pvgp.org also works).

It's a great charity event (vintage care race) with many, many great cars of all stripes in a huge car display in Schenley Park (on the golf course). It has become a huge PCA event for the local chapters, but I never see more than a couple of 928s (altho easily between 100 to 200 other Porsche models). The breadth of the display is fantastic as well (Ferraris, Lambos, Rolls, Bentlys, MG's Astins, Jags, etc, and every stripe of American muscle and luxury, from concourse to course, and each type in its own area - great show).

Also, if there is interest, we can put together a backroads cruise up in the nearby hills, with plenty of twisties! The race itself is pretty big, with cars from all over the US.

As to the details, I spoke with Ken Jeremiah, the local PCA contact, to request coat-tailing on their space - of course he happily agreed. The charge is approximately $50 for Saturday and $45 for Sunday, to have your car there on the course, on display. That cost covers a catered gourmet lunch for two under a nice tent set-up each day, and $20 of it goes to the PVGP, which is a charity event itself. Not a bad deal! Ken tells me there were 280 people for lunch last year. You can come either or both days. Make a mini-vacation around it!

So, please let me know how many are interested. If you do wish to attend and you are from out of town, book your rooms in Pittsburgh now, as the City fills up fast with car enthusiasts from all over. Also, Stan Shaw previously informed me that we may be able to get sponsorship funds from the OC (up to $300 or so) to do a custom T-shirt, or banner, etc. Stan will need to present to the Board first. If anyone wants to peruse that, let me and/or Stan know (any additional volunteers for this event would be welcome!). The OC has resources to help with graphics for the shirts (928 OC logo) and vendors that can provide them as well.

Lastly, feel free to invite as many 928 folks as you want - this ought to be fun...See you soon - Ed

Last time I was in Pitt, I had breakfast at Pamela's in the strip district. That was THE best breakfast I've ever had. Unfortunately, I cannot make it... well maybe I can. We'll see.
