I voted Toy/Hobby, but I don't consider it to be a "money drain" any more than any of my other hobbys.

Default Investment? Probably Not (Long)

People who say they actually will make money on the sale of a 928 and are honest in adding in all their costs ("investments") are either:

1) absolutely fortunate and unusual and belong to a rare small minorty and were hit with dumb luck and great timing when buying.....(dumb luck is good btw) or

2) one of the very few knowledgeable buyers/dealers like Willhoit... or

3) Are either flat-out lyers

4) Or are having mental delusions that the market's going to catch up with their ongoing "investment" costs. My delusion is that I might have fallen into category 1. I have two virtually pristine P-cars that are not cooperating though...and working on another one.

Mostly we'll hear from groups 3 and 4....with a few legitimate claims coming in from Group 1. We don't hear from Willhoit since he has no one to convince about his "niche" market. I'm not saying a 928s can't be a $$ investment, it's just unlikely. A few truly scarce edition 928s may have graduated to the "investment level" but the recent 928 buyers on Barrett and Jackson would seem to indicate otherwise.

On the surface most 928s look good..but under their skin the truth lies. Lots of factors make or break an "investment" These cars are great but not masses of people believe in them enough to pay the higher end prices and keep them up. Also, there is too much competition in the car market for the same amount of money

928 values is a sensitive topic and each car must be judged its own merits..and the realities of the market cannot be ignored. You car's worth to you what you're willing to pay upfront and then pour into it...but don't expect the masses to share your same sense of level of worth. Not even the Porsche mags side with 928ers, although we do get mentioned from time to time to help bolster magazine sales. At least one 911 mag won't even publish anything 928 anymore.

Admittedly, this could all change if someone has a great breakthrough and for a couple of thousand $$ a supercharger can be retrofitted for recognized unbelieaveablely cheap performance and it becomes a craze to get a 928. Nothing's impossible...and there are those working towards this.

I don't see the Big Two Plus dealers getting rich off selling 928 parts but I hope they thrive so I can continue to keep my cars running. The day the parts sources dry up, is the day they truly become collector cars relegated to the garages.

Just my unpopular thoughts...I'm still working on being upbeat. A couple of you gave me some fatherly advice but I'm a slow learner. I apologize if this is not what some of you want to hear....but it's what seems to be in the tea leaves. I'm sure many of you are seeing something different. I hope you're right.

our 928's are investments-in FUN!

we had some "issues" recently with the '83-she just wouldn't start. turns out it was a relay problem. it's not too bad, considering owning her for more than a year and this was the very first time we had "issues".

took her out for a little ride today, then pulled both cars next to each other in the driveway, just to park the '83 back in the garage where she belongs.

man, there's nothing like the sound of the two 928's, just purring together. makes me just to think of it!

Toy Toy Toy. How could it be anything else? I mean, German Muscle car, 20 yrs ahead of it's time, easy to work on and keep running. Minimal rust. 200,000+ mile lifespan. Get one for under 8K easy, and still turn heads everywere you go. Sounds like fun to me! - Ruf

True, true..............for one Michael Schumacher there's thousands of club racers with virtually zero sponsorship and/or prize money.

But the thrill of the chase............retired for +10yrs now (from racing that is) haven't found a replacement yet.
