Default Thought About Selling the 928.......Long...UPDATE

I know I know I'm nuts!

Actually I seriously am pondering if I should sell the car or not, I thought getting different perspectives from others may help me decide.

I bought the car last March sight unseen and honestly if it weren't for the help of a couple of listers I would not have done this. I'm very very happy with the car and in general it's capabilities. I'm also pleased with it's mechanical and physical condition, it drives nice, no rattles etc. and I've narrowed down it's mechanical requirements to a new steering rack, tie rods and a pan gasket. I will do the motor mounts as well since I can combine the labor with the steering rack removal. Realistically I won't need to spend too much to make it perfect mechanically. Physically if I spend about $2 - 3 K I can have a car I can possibly show in concours. I may not win but I think it would be worthy.

So there are no real reasons to sell the car except for personal reasons. Many know that our family has relocated to MA and we've been trying to sell a house in ME. We've recently decided to take the house in ME off the market and keep it as a vacation home and long term investment. So now we are searching for a townhouse in MA which is what we can afford. The problem is that in the towns we want to live the places we can afford do not include a garage.

I personally can not bare to keep this car outdoors, it's exterior condition is really nice and it's obvious the car hasn't seen much weather. I don't want to lose this and for me personally I like my cars pristine. So my only option would be to store the car in the garage in ME and drive it when we visit the house. Essentially I will only be able to drive it on weekends maybe twice a month during the summers (which are short in ME!). I also will not be able to tinker with it and work on it as frequently as I would if the car was nearby. Part of my mental relaxation is actually detailing the car (yeah I'm weird) and I wouldn't be able to do this as frequently as I like. So I would be paying insurance and registration on a car I barely get to use.

The variables include the possibility of finding a cheap garage to rent during the summers which is nearby and allows regular access to the car (hard to find) and or possibly find a place with a garage that still offers what we want in living space.

My wife thinks I should keep it, she says it would be impossible to replace and it still keeps my preoccupied even when I can't drive it (ie: Rennlist etc.) .

It's easier for me to talk about this right now as the car sits in storage over 400 miles away and is not easily beckoning me to drive it.

Any suggestions?

Afshin,

What's up with these threads lately?

I don't think anyone can answer these questions for you, and coming here means you're going to get one type of answer (maybe asking here was caused by a subconscious desire to keep it).

I can't imagine anyone getting rid of a car like this when their wife/gf says to keep it. Dude, that's the golden ticket!
Part of my mental relaxation is actually detailing the car (yeah I'm weird)...
You're not at all weird for this, I think a fair percentage of car guys would say the same thing, whether it's a 928 or something else they love. Without getting too weird myself, there are very real reasons for this.

I see your point about keeping it outside, but hell, don't give up a car just because you think someone else will take care of it better than you do. Get a cover and spend MORE time detailing it, not less. Summers are much longer down there and you'll get to spend much more time with it than you ever did up north. keep it. keep it. keep it. or sell it to me.

If you don't need to get rid of it because of finances, even if you just leave it in Maine that will give you a chance for your options to play out. Sounds like you have enough going on with the move that maybe just not worrying about it for a little while will be good, and you may find there are other options once you get settled in. Since you have the option to keep it in a garage somewhere, you don't really need to rush things. It really sounds like you don't want to get rid of it, and that there's no pressing need to do so.

Afsin, I've got garage space. Actually, at the moment I do not. But, once Spring hits and Carl and Chris retreive their cars, there'll be space for the Spring/Summer/Fall. OTOH, I'm North of Boston.

If its a financial matter, SELL IT, its just a car and there are other more important things in life.

If your wife thinks you should keep it and you are "very very happy with the car and in general it's capabilities. I'm also pleased with it's mechanical and physical condition" then keep it.

If you still want to sell it, at a very very reasonable price, PM me and I will get it off your hands very quickly

What about getting a weather-proof car cover?

I have plenty of garage space South of The Mason-Dixon line. You can come visit her anytime you like.

Af, I know the situation you're in as well as anyone here, probably better.

I agree with what Chris said. Unless it's imperative for financial reasons, just take your time and see how things work out through the summer. That is YOUR car, you took a lot of time choosing it, you know it pretty well now, and you are happy with it.

Beautiful 5-speeds like yours don't come along that often.

Besides, we would have a blast this summer taking early Sunday morning high-speed jaunts. I wonder how many speeding tickets we'd get?

Over the 22 years I've owned my first Porsche, it has been in storage several times during career moves - one stint of 3 1/2 years while working in France as the longest: Today, we are both still as excited to fire it up for a run as the first time. We knew from the beginning that this one was a keeper ....

If you feel this way about your 928, the answer is obvious.

It's winter. I can't drive my car. I'm feeling restless.

Take a good look at the car on a fine spring day and tell me you want to sell it. If you do, it will be the right time of year to make a sale. LOL

Afshin,

Since I've seen your car, I can attest to its beauty... so here's the deal. Your car is down this way already. You can store it at my house, I'll drive it for you and I'll even tinker with it so I can figure out how to fix stuff on mine. Hell I'll even go pick it up so you don't have to come all the way down here just to move it to my place. (I'm such a nice guy!)

In all sincerity if you just don't have to sell it ...don't. I sold my 86.5 in March of '06 and I see it almost everyday... and now that my garage is built I want it back! Unfortunately the guy I sold it to loves it. Besides, what is your boy going to strive for? I know he's young yet, but that changes very quickly.

Huuummm,

Sorry there Afshin. No 928, no Frenzy for you!!

Just kidding. It doesn't sound, at least I didn't hear any reason presented yet that would warrant its sale? I am sure that it wouldn't take long if you were to list it but that is besides the point. Keep it. Drive it on nice days. If it weren't for my lack of time with not 1 but 2 under the age of 16mos AND the fact that all of the hoses under my intake manifold are crumbling away little by little every day, hence the FE in the passenger seat I would be driving mine daily. Need a VW GTI??

Glad to hear that the job search has panned out and that you and your wife are doing well. Keep the car, get a good cover and call it a day. Wash it on weekends, and your wife is right, You will never get a chance to replace it and it will haunt you.

Michael & Lisa

Guys thank you for the input, very much appreciated.

As many of you have already pointed out, it's easy to talk about this now while the car is out of sight and in storage.

Financially we do not need to sell the car although if I did sell it we could probably afford to get that garage I need

Thanks for all the gracious offers to drive the car this sounds like a very generious offer

Dave if you're serious that you have some space available this summer I may take you up on it for at least part of the summer or fall so long as you can deal with seeing me regularly. Not sure where your garage is but at least it's closer than ME and especially in the fall when the weather is questionable in ME I can still drive it in MA. PM me any particulars when you get a chance.

I have also considered a car cover but I worry that several days of rain may cause a haze in the clearcoat. Not sure if this is possible, I will do a search on this topic, maybe it can get me by for short stints. The other problem is that some of the townhouse complexes have limited parking space and we already have two other cars which we use daily so extended stays may not be possible.

Again I really appreciate the input, I think I have a few ideas to help get some driving time this summer while maintaining it's condition

928's are like the watch in the Patek advertisement where you never own it, but care for it for the next generation.
My demented reasoning, but one way of looking at a classic. Mac
