New Addition -- 1985 928S Manual
Out with the stolen, in with the cheap! I've replaced my 1980 928S Euro with a 1985 928S (US) 5sp... it's been painted somewhat haphazardly but it was only $4k. Sorry, I didn't follow the rule about buying the best one that I could. Nor did I have a PPI done! I'm flying by the seat of my pants! Hey, where *are* my pants?
Mileage is somewhere north of 171k since the odometer is broken (surprise!). The CarFax backs up that the mileage is not much more, however. It drives much younger than 171k+--the clutch is strong and the engine pulls well. No drips or evidence of it, even, except for a little bit of old sludge around the rear diff. Belt looks awesomely new and is tensioned correctly. No strange sounds coming from engine or exhaust; underbody is rust-free. Very awesome feeling brakes. Aftermarket tint on back windows, no spare, only the tire iron in the toolbox.
Has rear air and leather dash. Well, *had* leather dash--a new replacement came with the car and someone has torn off the top of the old one. Also, no radio. Seats work except for forward/back driver's. Headliner is in crummy shape and it's not currently in the car. One of the visors doesn't have a cover. The only erroneous light / instrument operation is a 'coolant' (level) light sensor that stays on. The interior lights don't work, the pod/control lights do though. A/C and heat work great as well as all of the controls. Clock doesn't work. Suspension is strong. Rear hatch doesn't work. Rear wiper does. Sunroof doesn't work but doesn't leak (though it probably did in the past based on the condition of the headliner). No rear mats, wrong front ones, no manual or history records. A very small dimple on the passenger wheelwell. Front wipers only work in one speed and they sound like Chewbacca.
It wasn't previosly in the registry but I've submitted it now.
Now time for some pics:

I'm one of those nuts who likes to shift so I like the driving experience better. It feels a good bit torque-ier off the line compared to the 3-speed auto. The engine and exhast experience is TOTALLY different which is partly due to 16V vs 32V, Borla aftermarket vs. stock, and different levels of interior padding between the years. Both corner like they're on rails but I feel more snug in the '85.

Dude,
Your story is almost exactly like mine, except my clock works .
Below a certain price, you just gotta trust your instincts I think. You don't have to look too hard at a running '85 for that price in my book.
I've got a spare spare if you're interested. Good luck with it, looks really nice for that price. Have fun working on it.

Nice! I like the interior color.
I think you will find your missing pants next to your missing front spoiler....
But seriously, you can't beat that price and the strong mechanical condition of the car is a huge plus.
Also the 85 gearbox has the better syncros vs the early 5spds.

if 4k is a good price for a 170k k 928 mile car with not great cosmetics, what does that make a $6500 928 with 55k miles and good cosmetics and service records?

Honestly I think at $6500 that car is about what it's worth. Which is why no one has bought-it-now.
That car is also a 78 automatic, not exactly desirable unless you are one of those early model guys.
Yours is a 85 5-speed, whole different ball game. At 177k thats about 8000 miles per year your car was actually driven, not sat in a garage.
These cars are very reliable when you take care of the preventive maintenance and drive them like they were meant to....

Congrats!
Nice!
I've got to do the same dash recover on mine... although mine hadn't been ripped off, it's just all curly about the edges. I've already been through the interior lights and the odometer gear... so I can offer advice if needed.
Planning your trip to SITM '07??
