Default Side view mirror

I have an 88s4 and the passenger side mirror lifts off the post after returning from having the whole care repainted. I don' think it was properly reinstalled by the paint shop. I removed the hex bolt and removed the whole mirror from the car.

There is a screw that goes from the lower body of the mirror into the top part that holds the mirror so that its supposed to rotated for when I put the cover on the car in the garage.

Problem: screw has a very large spring between the two housings.

How do you get this screw to tighten down, as this is like a suspension coil spring and wont compress enough to get it threaded?

Are the threads stripped out, or is much pressure needed and and what type of tool will help get this compressed far enough down to start threading?

Any help would be helpful. I don't want the mirror to fly off and smack the $hit out of my car by dangling from the power motor wires.

Greatfuly, Michael
