Default Is it worth it? (to have my wheels refurbished - RV)

I was wonder if it would be worth while to have my wheels refurbished. I kinda like the look. Some of the plating is coming off, especially around the valve stem. The outer lip of one of the wheels has a nice dent in it, it looks like the PO hit a nice pot hole or something. It would be nice to freshen them up but I'm really wondering if a set of wheels with tires off Ebay would be better.

I would really value your thoughts on the subject.

If you really like these wheels & you cannot find another set in better condition for less than it would cost to refurbish yours - it's worth every penny.

Here is one for yea:

I have a set of those that I am looking to refinish. The funny thing is that the PO took them apart and missmatched them .

Sounds ridiculous but the driver side wheels are good while the passenger side front wheel is wider (has the rear outer half on it) and the rear is narrower than the other side.

Question, what is the procedure to disassemble them? I took all the bolts on one wheel but it would not bulge. Should I take the bolts and slowly try to inflate the tire so they come apart?

Thanks..

Sorry for the hijacking

Angel. If you like them, fix them. It will be cheaper than buying more. BTW, they make some coatings to mimic the look of anodizing. It looks good. Thats what I would do with the gold pieces. As for the silver lips, can you just polish and clearcoat or is it something else?

As for disassembly, ask Tony. He just sold some three piece rims and also had one in pieces. HE should know if there is a special procedure.

Few weeks ago a friend and I rebuilt a set of Kinesis wheels. Not the end of the world just time consuming.

It took the most time to clean up the old silicone (or whatever it was) sealing the inside of the wheel. Scotch bright pads, solvant, and elbow greese.

Not sure on torque specs, I think we torqued these to about 30ft-lbs.

I don't think the Gold is Anodizing it looks more like Podwer Coating.
So you're saying I could probably do this?
Never really considered taking this on myself. I could take them apart, power wash em, maybe throw on another clear coat, spiff up silver.
A Definite-Maybe.
THANKS!! You guys

Be careful with the mating surface - too thick they will not go back together very well. It was a very tight fit putting the face of the wheel back into the lip - any paint / powdercoating on there that is thicker than the original, might make things fit together tighter than before. I've seen just a simple coat of powder coating change tolerances.

With the wheels I rebuilt the face of the wheel had to be carefully pressed into the wheel, it just fit in there. Hope this makes sense, not sure how to explain it.

Great point Hacker.
In my previous job we rebuilt Wheel & Brakes for aircraft. It was imperative that the mating faces were properly treated because of the possibility for loss of tiebolt preload. Had a couple of wheel come loose because the mechanics were not following directions. After a couple of years they start to think they know more than the engineers. No catastrophic failures but close enough. FAA was in my Repair Station asking lots of questions.
This is to a smaller degree but imagine going into a turn at 60, the wheel loosening and the tire deflating. Could be bad.
I'll be careful.

The whites on ebay would look fabulous on my white/white, but offsets of 23 and 11mm, forget it!
What offsets are yours, Angel?

If they were local I would stop by for a "fitting" just for the pictures.

This is going to sound retarded but I don't know what the offsets are. How would I find out? I currently have the front wheels off the car while doing some suspension work.

Well, today I talked to a guy named Mike at BBS America in Atlanta and he gave me information about refurbishing my wheels. He said that I could take them apart, get them painted, the ding taken out and send the wheels to them and they'd reassemble them for $75/wheel. He says that the bolt hardware is not intended to be reused but that they don't sell it for fear of liability if the wheels came apart.

Also from the number I gave him it turns out my wheels belong to a 944. The 928 Wheels are a wider set.
FRT 7J x 16 RS157
Rear 8J x16 RS158
I don't think its rocket science so I just might take care of them myself.

Go for it! I always love seeing the BBSs --reminds me of the 80s. The only way to out-do yourself would be to buy Center Lines, 5 inches wider in the back!
