This car sold for $8,600 to Ebay member "ferrariracer1". A steal if you ask me. I would have bought it if I hadn't just bought the widebody.

Of course, this would not be a bargain if the engine had been abused and is about worn out...and if it needs an expensive repaint...and if the synchros are bad...etc. PPIs are always in order.
My PPI before last was EXCELLENT!!! My last PPI did not catch a lot of stuff...but luckily it was just small stuff.
Wait....is the widebody you're referring to the foto attached to your post? Looks like a fast ride but, like many 928s, very, very expensive to maintain. I'll stick to the Sharks.

Because the car is ROUGH, ROUGH, ROUGH, that's why it's back on Ebay.
I've laid my eyes on it when I was traveling in FL for work. Entire car has been repainted, interior does not look so hot in the photos, and it's sad to see it with your own eyes. Engine compartment is a mess, intake tube disintegrated, layer of oil and gunk over everything.
ABS warning light on, no A/C, nor seat controls that worked, tires dry rotting, and no tread on rears, etc.
At one time, this was a nice car (belly pans were present an accounted for, and someone dropped some money to put Michelin Pilots on it), but not anymore.
After looking at it, I thought perhaps a $4-5k car maximum. Before seeing it in person, I thought it might be a good deal.

It sold again, this time for only $8200. I was tempted. It would be mine if it hadn't gone above $7500.
It is a little scary not knowing what you are getting into. If I had won this car I know I would be sweating bullets about seeing this car and what might be wrong with it. I know that this car would have been a long term labor of love/sweat/blood/tears.
When I finally do get a 928, I plan on doing all of my own wrenching. But, my question is this. At what point is a car "beyond help" or more trouble than its worth. Would snagging this 89 been a hard lesson or could this have been the deal of the year?

But I do understand that once in a while someone in the country wins the Lotto too. Worse odds with Lotto actually but you'd best stick to a car with known, identified issues that can help you make your decision. Even with a PPI, this last 928 I bought is taking a lot of sweat equity to bring it up to snuff. All looks relatively well so far (I pretty well know what to look for) but I only have the word of a person who did a poor PPI and an owner who held info back. I'm proceeding cautiously, step at a time....only $2,000 or so into parts so far, most of which I should not have had to buy had the car been as represented.
Should be nice when I'm done though. I won't rest easy until it's had a good day's workout at the track and a long tour or two under its new T-belt.
