Default Oilpump and Crank Seal Question?

I managed to get the crank seal in. It was no picnic either as the seal wanted to flip out as I tried to tap it in. It did finally grab and now its installed.........or is it?

I also installed the o-ring and seal on the oilpump and here are the q's

1) The inner gear and outer gear of the oilpump appear to have a little dot stamped in them. Are these index marks? If so, how should the two gears be aligned to one another?

2) I read the manual on the oilpump and realized that the seal is to be mounted flush. This was close as I was ready to seat it completely in the race.
If that is the case, is the crank seal supposed to be flush as well or is it supposed to be drivin all the way till it seats completely? I sure hope it is the latter as that is what I did. The manual says nothing about it as far as I can tell.

TIA
Bernie

When I did my front crank seal I installed it flush. Same with the oil pump seal. I recall seeing the dots but don't recall the orientation. Someone here should know.

I just did the oil seal flush. In the WSM, it appears the special tool for the crank seal pushes it beyond flush by 1/32". How critical is this, I don't know.

Using the a long socket with the same ourter size as the seal works just fine.

As for those dots:

Bernie,
I wish you had mentioned doing the oil pump shaft seal (and not just the o-ring seal) earlier. I did mine last year when I had it all apart for the TB/wp job. I screwed up the first time and had to take it all apart again to fix the resulting oil leak. I knew from the location of the drip it was coming from the pump, but I didn't know which seal was at fault. I figured I had pinched the big o-ring, but it was fine. It was the shaft seal leaking.
When I got it apart, it appeared that the little spring in back had jumped out of position, probably while I struggled to keep the seal in position as I tapped away at it to get it in squarely. At least thats my theory. The second time, I put the seal into the pump first, so that I could visually verify the spring was still in place from the inside of the pump. Then I lubed up the shaft and slid it carefully into the seal and then replaced the whole pump into the block.

Hi Fellas and thanx for the replies.

I see I wsn't the only one that noticed those little marks......
Glad that question is resolved.

Glenn, I installed my oilpump shaft seal with the pump disassembled so I doubt I will have any issues there. That seal went in fine. I was actually able to just push this seal into place without the need to hammer on it.

Its the crank seal that I am curious about. Since I couldn't find any specific info on how far to seat it, I drove it all the way in until it seated against the block. I am sure it is ok as far as a seal is concerned but I noticed in the neck of the oilpump that there is a little oiling hole that gets partially blocked if you drive the oilpump seal all the way in. I am hoping that there is not a similar condition that would exist on the crank seal? I seem to remember that it would be ok if the seal were all the way in on the crank but I was looking for some verification. Maybe if someone has a decent pic of the crank seal area without the seal installed, it may solve this riddle?

BTW - Did you make it into my site ok?

Cheers
Bernie
